Acer palmatum ‘Nebula’ is another in a long line of excellent, reticulated Japanese maples introduced by Buchholz nursery. The leaves of Nebula emerge a light pink with peach and cream variegation. The foliage fades to green by summer but maintains the darker contrasting veins. These leaves then change to a striking red color in the fall. ‘Nebula’ is a small to medium growing Japanese maple that will grow to about 8 feet tall at maturity.

Acer palmatum ‘First Ghost’ is another of the reticulated leaf form ghost series from Talon Buchholz. 'First Ghost' requires afternoon shade in most climates and mostly shade in hotter areas. Growing more upright when young, with age it becomes as wide or wider than tall. 'First Ghost' boasts outstanding spring color that is predominately creamy white or yellow with dark veins and red margins. The variegation on 'First Ghost' holds longer into the summer than any reticulated cultivar we grow. Fall color is bright orange to red.

A very vigorous grower this maple has been around in Japan at least since 1882. With a name that means thunder 'Inazuma' really makes a statement in the garden as older trees can reach 25 feet or more in height and usually as wide or wider than tall. Spring color is purple and then it bronzes as summer approaches showing off the attractive green veining. Acer palmatum ‘Herbstfeuer’ is a fast, upright growing Japanese maple with large, round leaves. In German, the name means Autumn fire and 'Herbstfeuer' certainly lives up to its name with its fiery red and orange colors in the fall. In spring, the large rounded leaves, held on red petioles, appear very light green with a white pubescence before turning dark green for summer. The growth habit is decidedly upright when young, becoming more rounded with age. Though listed as a palmatum there is some speculation that this may be a palmatum - circinatum cross.

Acer palmatum ‘Osakazuki’ was listed in catalogs in Japan since the mid 1800s this upright green Japanese Maple is mostly known for its bright red fall color. That is not the only feature that makes this great tree worth growing, red samaras hang from it's graceful branches during the summer forming a nice contrast with the green heavily textured leaves. The sturdy foliage helps 'Osakazuki tolerate full sun even in hotter climates. The cup like shape formed at the base of the leaf led the Japanese to refer to this tree as "Saki-cup-like leaf" or 'Osakazuki'. Fall color is a stunning bright red, Southern Living magazine even went as far as publishing an article a few years back stating that ‘Osakazuki’ had the best fall color of any maple. A fast growing cultivar that comes out more orange red than purple red in early spring but rapidly darkens as it is exposed to the spring sun, 'Oshio beni' is a strong grower. It will not hold it's color as long into the hot summers of the Southeast as well as some other cultivars, turning green by late June in Atlanta. What 'Oshio beni' lacks in summer color it more than makes up for in the fall when the foliage turns a bright orange red. The name means the great red tide.

Acer palmatum ‘Oki kasane’ is a member of the Corallinum group of Japanese maples. All of these Corallinum type Japanese maples leaf out very early in the spring, and when they do, ‘Oki kasane’ has beautiful peachy orange foliage. This incredible color typically holds through April. The colors then transition to orange and then eventually green by the end of May. Much like other Corallinum type Japanese maples and maybe more than the others, ‘Oki kasane’ will usually push new growth in the summer which resembles the bright orange-red foliage of spring. This new growth on top of the olive green foliage is extremely attractive. Fall color is then orange to red.
