‘Germaine’s Gyration’ was discovered by Bob Vandermoss and introduced by Andre Iselli for his mother Germaine. This outstanding dissectum variety does well in the south, tolerating even full sun. This is important because most green dissectums will not tolerate full sun as far south as Atlanta. Germaine's Gyration will become much wider than tall with the inner branching swirling around the main trunk in different directions making it obvious where the gyration part of the name came from. The outer form of the tree however is a very pleasant and fairly symmetrical mound. Fall color begins in October as a golden yellow first turning orange then almost red as the temperatures cool in November.

'Heffner's Red Select' is definitely better than 'Bloodgood' but as to whether or not this is the holy grail, the jury is still out. Either way this is a nice small round topped tree. This continues much of the summer, although a relatively small plant, 'Hime shojo' seems to put on bright red new growth much of the year. This dense little shrubby tree holds its color very well long into the summer and even all summer long in cooler parts of its range. Although the best colors are achieved in full sun, and it will tolerate full sun in most areas, a little shade at some part of the day is appreciated in hotter climates. Acer palmatum ‘Inaba shidare’ is a dwarf Japanese maple with a weeping growth habit. 'Inaba Shidare' is one of the best lace leaf Japanese maple cultivars for hotter climates. 'Inaba shidare' can grow in full sun in even some of the hottest climates in the United States. The name 'Inaba Shidare' means "like the cascading leaves of the rice plant" and has been grown since at least the mid 1800s in Japan.
