Acer palmatum ‘Oridino nishiki’ is a medium size upright growing Japanese maple with incredible variegated color. Some leaves on ‘Oridino nishiki’ may have green, white or pink, or sometimes all three. Under perfect conditions, this can be one of the most incredible Japanese maples in cultivation. Unfortunately, these perfect conditions don’t often exist and this variegation is often lost. In our experience, ‘Oridino nishiki’ is usually a green tree with about 1-5% of the leaves displaying variegation. ‘Oridino nishki’ is of course still a tree worth having as the variegation that it does have is almost unmatched. Another unique characteristic of ‘Oridino nishiki’ is that the bark often has long stripes of reds and oranges, adding even more interest to this great tree.

Acer palmatum ‘Orion’ is another great plant from Dick Wolff of Red Maple Nursery in Pennsylvania, The very small deeply divided foliage appears bright cherry red in early spring. As the leaves age they become maroon, copper and olive green and much larger. This little tree always seems to have new growth at the tips with little bursts of red sitting at the branch ends creating an explosion of color like a miniature fireworks display in the garden. Acer palmatum 'Ornatum' Dwarf Japanese Maple

One of the older dissectums in cultivation in Europe having been grown for well over 100 years. It is still popular today although competition from varieties that hold color longer into summer has caused production to decrease. Emerging green dusted with red in shady areas to a rusty red in more sun, 'Ornatum' forms a large graceful shrub when mature. While very heat tolerant 'Ornatum' does prefer light shade in hot climates. Acer palmatum ‘Osakazuki’ was listed in catalogs in Japan since the mid 1800s this upright green Japanese Maple is mostly known for its bright red fall color. That is not the only feature that makes this great tree worth growing, red samaras hang from it's graceful branches during the summer forming a nice contrast with the green heavily textured leaves. The sturdy foliage helps 'Osakazuki tolerate full sun even in hotter climates. The cup like shape formed at the base of the leaf led the Japanese to refer to this tree as "Saki-cup-like leaf" or 'Osakazuki'. Fall color is a stunning bright red, Southern Living magazine even went as far as publishing an article a few years back stating that ‘Osakazuki’ had the best fall color of any maple. Acer palmatum 'Oshio beni' Red Japanese Maple

A fast growing cultivar that comes out more orange red than purple red in early spring but rapidly darkens as it is exposed to the spring sun, 'Oshio beni' is a strong grower. It will not hold it's color as long into the hot summers of the Southeast as well as some other cultivars, turning green by late June in Atlanta. What 'Oshio beni' lacks in summer color it more than makes up for in the fall when the foliage turns a bright orange red. The name means the great red tide.

Acer palmatum 'Oto hime' is a dwarf Japanese maple with small leaves that emerge almost yellow in spring tipped with red edges. In summer foliage turns a nice even green. Fall color is generally orange but sometimes red or yellow. This wonderful little tree was named after Queen Otohime a mermaid queen who ruled a fabled kingdom at the bottom of the sea. The name means little queen and the name is perfect for this little queen of the garden.

Acer palmatum ‘Otome zakura’ is a member of the Corallinum group of Japanese maples and is one of our favorites. All of these Corallinum type Japanese maples leaf out very early in the spring, and when they do, ‘Otome zakura’ has some of the brightest red foliage you can imagine. This incredible red color typically holds through April. The colors then transition to orange and then eventually green by the end of May. Much like other Corallinum type Japanese maples and maybe more than the others, ‘Otome zakura’ will usually push new growth in the summer which resembles the bright red foliage of spring. This red new growth on top of the olive green foliage is extremely attractive. Acer palmatum 'Paisleigh' is a dwarf Japanese maple with large, dissected leaves. These leaves emerge in spring bright green, sometimes with a pinkish hue. These leaves then get an orange hue to them during the summer that is quite attractive. The fall color ranges from yellow to orange to red. 'Paisleigh' was originally found as a seedling from 'Autumn Fire'. We originally named this tree 'Summer Desire' based on the interesting colors the tree can have during the summer. However, it is now known as 'Paisleigh', named after my daughter Madelyn Paisleigh. The name also fits as the leaves are unusually shaped for a lace leaf Japanese Maple. The leaves are large and rounded with broad lobes. The shape of the leaves coupled with the array of colors that can be found at different times throughout the year gives the appearance of paisleys. This is a brand new variety introduced by Maple Ridge Nursery.

Acer palmatum ‘Peve Multicolor’ is a tremendous variegated variety of Japanese maple with white dusting across the foliage. Unfortunately, this variegation is inconsistent and does not appear every year. Without the variegation, ‘Peve Multicolor’ has light green leaves and an attractive form. This seems to be the more common look for us. Our Peve Multicolor are not currently showing variegation. Fall color is going to be a brilliant yellow to orange regardless of the variegation.
