Listed in 1710 in Japan this old cultivar is a Japanese Favorite. The brilliant red of early spring quickly becomes a rich purple. Holding its color in to the summer even in hot climates this tree is also said to be very hardy in cooler areas. This is a fast growing upright maple with older specimens reaching 25 feet or more becoming more round topped with age. Fall brings on special appreciation as Musashino takes on a life of it on with brilliant cherry red color.

'Nishiki sho' seems to form rough corky ridges at a slightly younger age and seems to grow a little faster but shorter and wider than 'Arakawa'. 'Nishiki yamato' is a very fast growing tree and develops its rough bark quicker than many other rough bark Japanese maples as well.

Acer palmatum 'Noel' is a variegated Japanese maple from the corallinum category of Japanese maples. Like many corallinum type Japanese Maples 'Noel' is bright red in the early spring. 'Noel' might even have the brightest red spring color of any of the corallinum type Japanese maples. What makes 'Noel' even more unique is the splashes of pink variegation that show out across much of the foliage. This bright red with pink variegation gives 'Noel' one of the best spring displays of any Japanese maple. By summer the red leaves fade to an emerald green and maintain the splashes of pink. The leaves then turn bright red again for fall. This is a newer variety for us, but has quickly become one of our very favorite Japanese maples

Acer palmatum 'Nuresagi' Red Japanese Maple

'Nuresagi' also known as, the 'Wet Heron' maple is very fast growing especially when young. Younger plants tend to put on vertical growth faster than most varieties we grow, sometimes running out 3-4 feet upright leaders in one season. Of course it does not grow at this rate every year. The long leaders will spend some time filling out before sending out more vertical growth. Very nice white striations also appear on the bark of older wood. The name 'Wet Heron' comes from the blue cast created by silver pubescence covering the deep red leaves when they emerge in spring. This reminded the Japanese of the 19th century, of a wet heron. 'Nuresagi' was listed in nursery catalogs as early as 1882.

Acer palmatum 'O jishi' Lion's Head Japanese Maple

Acer palmatum ‘O jishi’ is one of the famous lions head maples. 'O jishi' is the male lion and 'Meijishi' is the female lion. Shishigashira means lions head, and while this term can be used to describe either cultivar it is generally used to describe 'Meijishi'. The leaves of 'Ojishi' are heavily crinkled but lighter in color and not quite as tightly crinkled as 'Meijishi'. 'O jishi' is also a much slower growing smaller tree. In full sun new growth has a red tinge to the tips of the foliage. Fall color is red and glorious. The leaves appear very crowded on the stem giving the tree a compact and congested look, with the short internodal length making it hard to propagate and contributing to the fact that it is rarely seen in nurseries. The name, ‘Octopus’, aptly describes this cultivar with long aching branches that spread like tentacles in all directions. 'Octopus' forms a large spreading irregular mound. The deeply dissected leaves emerge a bright pink red in early spring before turning to dark purple. When summers heat arrives the leaves first bronze before becoming mostly dark green in hot climates. Fall color is breathtaking almost fire engine red.
