Acer palmatum ‘Jubilee’ is a fantastic reticulated Japanese maple with stunning variegation all year long. ‘Jubilee’ begins the year with bright pink and purple leaves that are mixed with white variegation. ‘Gwen’s Rose Delight’ in spring is a dazzling display as new leaves emerge a bright cherry red or bright pink with olive green. As temperatures heat up the red or pink is joined by cream and green, but unlike many variegated cultivars at least some of the pink color remains all sumer long in all but he hottest climates. While sun brings out the best color, this plant needs afternoon shade especially in hot climates. Fall color ranges from red to orange. Acer palmatum ‘Dark Ghost’ is the newest member of the “Ghost” series. ‘Dark Ghost’ is a reticulated Japanese maple just like the rest of the “Ghosts”. Unsurprisingly, ‘Dark Ghost’ has the darkest purple leaves of any of the other ghost varieties. ‘Dark Ghost’ is even a darker purple than ‘Purple Ghost’. ‘Dark Ghost’ also has a larger leaf than many of the other ghost varieties. Acer palmatum ‘Dark Ghost’ leafs out in the spring with a deep purple-red color with reticulated veining. This color holds pretty well into the summer even if the reticulation doesn’t. Acer palmatum ‘Aka shigitatsu sawa’ has amazing early spring variegation. Almost the entire leaf will be cream with undertones of red and dark green veins. The leaves will turn green in the summer but the veins will be darker. 'Aka shigitatsu sawa' will not tolerate afternoon sun in hot climates but should be placed where it can get 3-4 hours of morning sun because light is required to get the red tones to show up. This plant is slow to mature but will turn into a small round topped tree that will be almost as wide as tall.  Synonymous with 'Beni shigitatsu sawa' 10 year size:   Height: 7-9 Feet   Width: 5-7 Feet

Acer palmatum ‘First Ghost’ is another of the reticulated leaf form ghost series from Talon Buchholz. 'First Ghost' requires afternoon shade in most climates  and mostly shade in hotter areas. Growing more upright when young, with age it becomes as wide or wider than tall. 'First Ghost' boasts outstanding spring color that is predominately creamy white or yellow with dark veins and red margins. The variegation on 'First Ghost'  holds longer into the summer than any reticulated cultivar we grow. Acer palmatum 'Ryugu' is a very exciting variegated Japanese maple. 'Ryugu' has about as much variegation to the leaves as any other Japanese maple. The speckled white variegation is quite consistent and should persist year over year. The other thing that is so interesting about this Japanese maple is it's dwarf, compact growth habit. 'Ryugu' will stay quite small with a dense and compact habit. The leaves are green with mostly creamy white variegation speckled all over the leaves. When fall comes 'Ryugu' catches on fire with very bright orange-red color. 10 Year Size: Height: 3-5 feet   Width: 2-4 feet

Probably the best variegated maple in our collection. New growth emerges as a show stopping collage of red, pink, orange, cream and green and holding these beautiful colors well into the summer before finally changing to a nice cream and green. Adding to the mystic is this approximate translation of Beni shichihenge, red variegated ghost that changes.  Fall color is a distinctive shade of orange. 'Beni shichihenge' grows as a beautiful vase shaped tree when young becoming more round topped with age. Acer palmatum ‘Cosmos’ is one of the most heavily variegated Japanese maples in existence. ‘Cosmos’ has green leaves with splashes of pink and white all over them. This variegation is typically very consistent and persists even in the summer. Fall color is a vibrant orange. Not to be confused with ‘Radiant’, which was found as a sport off of ‘Cosmos’. 10 Year Size: Height: 8-10 feet Width: 4-6 feet

Acer palmatum 'Yama nishiki' Variegated Japanese Maple is an elegant upright Japanese maple known for its striking white reticulated leaves, which are intricately veined with green. This unique leaf pattern creates the effect of snow-covered mountain peaks, a nod to the tree's name, meaning "Snow Peak" in Japanese. This variegation is outstanding but is not always consistent and is not visible at all times throughout the year. During fall, the foliage transforms into vibrant shades of orange and red, adding seasonal interest. At maturity, Yama Nishiki typically grows to a height of 8 to 10 feet, making it an excellent choice for smaller gardens or landscapes where its delicate beauty can be appreciated.

Acer palmatum ‘Nebula’ is another in a long line of excellent, reticulated Japanese maples introduced by Buchholz nursery. The leaves of Nebula emerge a light pink with peach and cream variegation. The foliage fades to green by summer but maintains the darker contrasting veins. These leaves then change to a striking red color in the fall. ‘Nebula’ is a small to medium growing Japanese maple that will grow to about 8 feet tall at maturity. 10 Year Size: Height: 6-8 feet Width: 4-6 feet

In spring, Acer palmatum 'Higasa yama' may be one of the most exciting and colorful trees you will ever see, there is nothing else quite like it. Unfortunately this intense color is short lived. As soon as temperatures start to get hot most of the variegation will fade away leaving a faint white or cream line down the center of the lobe. And when it gets really hot in our southeastern summers it will go totally green. In late summer 'Higasa yama' will send out  long runners of new growth with solid green leaves much larger and differently shaped than the typical leaves. These limbs will usually put out typical leaves the next spring  if not they should be removed. Fall color can be quite dramatic with reds oranges and yellows. Our Higasayamas aren't showing much variegation this year but Higasayama is notorious for having year to year variegation volatility.
