The Ghost Japanese Maple Bundle is a mystery pack of four different "Ghost" Japanese maple varieties. All of these ghost varieties have what we call reticulated variegation where the veining on the leaves is very pronounced due to darker veins and lighter colored leaves. These are some of the most incredible and sought after Japanese maples in existence and some of my personal favorite trees.

Acer palmatum 'Ilarian' Variegated Japaneses Maple

Acer palmatum ‘Ilarian’ is a stunning variegated Japanese maple with splashes of pinks and whites across green leaves. ‘Ilarian’ needs to be protected from the hot afternoon sun and should actually be grown in mostly shade in hotter climates.

Acer palmatum 'Higasayama' Variegated Japanese Maple

In spring, Acer palmatum 'Higasa yama' may be one of the most exciting and colorful trees you will ever see, there is nothing else quite like it. Unfortunately this intense color is short lived. As soon as temperatures start to get hot most of the variegation will fade away leaving a faint white or cream line down the center of the lobe. And when it gets really hot in our southeastern summers it will go totally green. In late summer 'Higasa yama' will send out long runners of new growth with solid green leaves much larger and differently shaped than the typical leaves. These limbs will usually put out typical leaves the next spring if not they should be removed. Fall color can be quite dramatic with reds oranges and yellows.
Our Higasayamas aren't showing much variegation this year but Higasayama is notorious for having year to year variegation volatility. If you receive a Higasayama without much variegation, it should variegate again in the future.

Acer palmatum 'Asahi zuru' Variegated Japanese Maple

Acer palmatum ‘Asahi zuru’ is a medium sized Japanese maple with intense variegation. This tree is splashed with pinks and whites and greens. These colors are similar but more consistent than the classic ‘Oridino nishiki’. ‘Asahi zuru’ will have occasional pink striations on the bark. Like most variegated varieties, ‘Asahi zuru’ should be planted in part shade for the best color, or at least given protection from the hot afternoon sun. Height 10-12 feet Width: 6-8 feet

Acer palmatum 'Matsugae' Variegated Japanese Maple

We find 'Matsugae' to be a very dependable variegated cultivar in the southeast. In spring it opens with cream and rose markings along its irregular shaped medium green leaves. In summer the rose color fades away and the cream turns pure white leaving beautifully contrasting variegation all summer long. Red petioles also add to the overall appearance of 'Matsugae'. This is a very old cultivar with a name that means 'the pine branch' which is hard to understand for a variegated cultivar. This plant is similar to 'Kagiri nishiki' but is faster growing and has better variegation. Fall color is usually orange.

Acer palmatum ‘Tsuma gaki’ is the famous "Red Fingernails" Japanese maple gets this name from the bright red tips on the light green almost yellow newly emerging leaves. Acer palmatum ‘Sagara nishiki’ is a variegated Japanese maple with excellent yellow variegation splashed all over the foliage. The yellow variegation is more strongly concentrated along the edges of the leaves but there can be specks and splashes all over some leaves. Acer palmatum ‘Kin pai’ is a variegated form of ‘Osakazuki’. Everything about ‘Kin pai’ is similar to that of its parent plant, ‘Osakazuki’, except for the pink and red edges to the leaves. The leaves of ‘Kin pai’ are also much narrower than the large leaves of ‘Osakazuki’. The variegation on the leaves of ‘Kin pai’ is most prominent in the spring, but can be seen pretty much all Sumer as well. Acer palmatum ‘Baby Ghost’ is the smallest of the “Ghost” series of reticulated Japanese maples. ‘Baby Ghost’ first leafs out with an amber color leaf that transitions to red. Leaves then fade to burgundy and ultimately to green which maintains throughout the summer. 'Ruby de Sofia' is a beautiful reticulated variety that has fantastic colorations of pink and white in the spring. Those colors then turn to green for the summer, still maintaining the reticulated style. 'Ruby de sofia' earned it's name by putting on a brilliant showing of ruby red leaves in fall. This tree was introduced by Angel Mendoza and named after his daughter Sofia. We are also quite partial to this tree; in addition to it's amazing colors and growing habits, we also have a daughter Sophia who's birthstone is Ruby!
