Acer sieboldianum ‘Kumoi nishiki’ is an upright growing Japanese maple with dark green leaves with a white dust-like variegation sprinkled across all of the leaves. Acer palmatum 'Mayday' is one of the most sought after Japanese Maples currently on the market. 'Mayday' is a Mikawa yatsabusa variant with bright yellow color in the spring. Throughout the summer this yellow turns to a light green and can sometimes show subtle variegation. 'Mayday' grows just like Mikawa yatsabusa with short nodes and bunched up buds creating a shingled leaf effect. 'Mayday' is a slower grower than Mikawa yatsabusa and will only reach a few feet tall at maturity. This is an extremely rare Japanese maple that will likely always be in short supply.

While some consider this cultivar synonymous with 'Arakawa' this plant collected from Smith-Gilbert Arboretum and labeled 'Nishiki sho' seems different than 'Arakawa' collected from other sources. 'Nishiki sho' seems to form rough corky ridges at a slightly younger age and seems to grow a little faster but shorter and wider than 'Arakawa'. Acer palmatum 'Koyuki' is a very interesting Japanese maple with an unusual leaf shape. This cultivar should not be confused with the reticulated variety by the same name. 'Koyuki' has green leaves with rounded lobes. These leaves turn a reddish orange color in the fall.
There is a similar variety called 'Koyamandi nishiki' that is known as the snowflake maple. 'Koyuki' translates to little snowflake which makes sense as these are two of the only varieties with this sort of rounded leaf shape.
