'Murasaki kiyohime' is a small maple that will grow much wider than tall, Like it's close relative 'Kiyo hime' this cultivar emerges in spring with red tips to the leaves before turning green for the summer. there are very slight differences between the 2 maples. We find that the edge of 'Murasaki kiyohime' to be more maroon red and 'Kiyo hime' to be more orange red but the tint of these colors can be affected by the sun making them hard to distinguish. Fall color ranges from bronze to orange. 'Murasaki kiyohime' is also slightly more upright when young, often sending up vertical shoots of a foot or more on very young plants only to spend the rest of it's life thickening up and growing wider. Acer palmatum ‘Osakazuki’ was listed in catalogs in Japan since the mid 1800s this upright green Japanese Maple is mostly known for its bright red fall color. That is not the only feature that makes this great tree worth growing, red samaras hang from it's graceful branches during the summer forming a nice contrast with the green heavily textured leaves. The sturdy foliage helps 'Osakazuki tolerate full sun even in hotter climates. The cup like shape formed at the base of the leaf led the Japanese to refer to this tree as "Saki-cup-like leaf" or 'Osakazuki'. Fall color is a stunning bright red, Southern Living magazine even went as far as publishing an article a few years back stating that ‘Osakazuki’ had the best fall color of any maple. When young, Acer palmatum 'Omure yama' may develop a leader and grow up, but as the tree reaches maturity the long slender new growth cascades down, giving the tree the weeping look that it is known for. Some growers stake 'Omure yama' when young to help it attain initial height from which to weep from. Plants that never develop a leader become wide weeping mounds not much different than the growth habit of many dissectums. I have heard other authors claim that this or that variety has the best fall color of any Japanese maple. We find 'Matsugae' to be a very dependable variegated cultivar in the southeast. In spring it opens with cream and rose markings along its irregular shaped medium green leaves. In summer the rose color fades away and the cream turns pure white leaving beautifully contrasting variegation all summer long. Red petioles also add to the overall appearance of 'Matsugae'. This is a very old cultivar with a name that means 'the pine branch' which is hard to understand for a variegated cultivar. This plant is similar to 'Kagiri nishiki' but is faster growing and has better variegation. Fall color is usually orange.
