Acer palmatum ‘Aocha nishiki’ is a small tree that will become almost as wide as it is tall with age. The name translates to green-yellow but 'Aocha nishiki' is mostly known for it's creamy yellow variegation, unfortunately this almost never shows up in hot climates. Not to worry, the bright chartreuse color of early spring leaves makes this tree a great addition to any garden. The name simply means green cascading which perfectly describes this great little tree. In spring the green color has a slightly blue tint that separates it from other green dissectums. At one time all green dissectums were probably called 'Ao shidare' but over time this cultivar became dominant and rightly so. Growth is very strong and pendulous. Ao shidare will tolerate full sun better than most green dissectum cultivars but could still benefit from some shade in hotter climates. The large leaves on ‘Vitifolium’ are what give it its name as they resemble the leaves of a grape vine. These large leaves emerge green with a bronze hue before maturing to a darker green in late spring and into the summer. Acer palmatum 'Paisleigh' is a dwarf Japanese maple with large, dissected leaves. These leaves emerge in spring bright green, sometimes with a pinkish hue. These leaves then get an orange hue to them during the summer that is quite attractive. The fall color ranges from yellow to orange to red. 'Paisleigh' was originally found as a seedling from 'Autumn Fire'. We originally named this tree 'Summer Desire' based on the interesting colors the tree can have during the summer. However, it is now known as 'Paisleigh', named after my daughter Madelyn Paisleigh. The name also fits as the leaves are unusually shaped for a lace leaf Japanese Maple. The leaves are large and rounded with broad lobes. The shape of the leaves coupled with the array of colors that can be found at different times throughout the year gives the appearance of paisleys. This is a brand new variety introduced by Maple Ridge Nursery.

Acer palmatum 'O jishi' Lion's Head Japanese Maple

Acer palmatum ‘O jishi’ is one of the famous lions head maples. 'O jishi' is the male lion and 'Meijishi' is the female lion. Shishigashira means lions head, and while this term can be used to describe either cultivar it is generally used to describe 'Meijishi'. The leaves of 'Ojishi' are heavily crinkled but lighter in color and not quite as tightly crinkled as 'Meijishi'. 'O jishi' is also a much slower growing smaller tree. In full sun new growth has a red tinge to the tips of the foliage. Fall color is red and glorious. The leaves appear very crowded on the stem giving the tree a compact and congested look, with the short internodal length making it hard to propagate and contributing to the fact that it is rarely seen in nurseries.
