Acer palmatum ‘Shigarami nishiki’ is a small Japanese maple with intense variegation. This tree is splashed with pinks and whites and greens. These colors are similar but more intense and consistent than the classic ‘Oridino nishiki’ Like most variegated varieties, ‘Shigarami nishiki’ should be planted in shade for the best color, or at least given protection from the hot afternoon sun.

Acer palmatum 'Okushimo' Green Japanese Maple

Acer palmatum 'Okushimo' was listed as early as 1710 in Japan. This old cultivar with a name that means pepper and salt, definitely has a place in the modern landscape. Leaves emerge chartreuse in spring with bright red petioles, before turning darker green and displaying cool little dimples all over the leaves. Its these dimples that reminded the Japanese of salt and pepper. Summer turns the leaves much darker and they begin to curl inward at the edges of the little sharp lobes. The distinctive green curled leaves of 'Okushimo' give it an ability to contrast just right with other plants in the garden and the fact that it is so decidedly vase shaped with most of its width above head height means that it can be tucked into corners and between paths or next to sidewalks. We do suggest that you plant 'Okushimo' in partial shade in hotter climates. The great fall color ranges from yellow to orange and even red.

This is a very rare reticulated leaf form dissectum. The new leaves in spring are light green sometimes almost white with dark veins. A great plant for many parts of the world. Although very beautiful 'Filigree' is more of a collector plant in hotter climates as summers heat will really do a number on it around August, causing it to drop a large percentage of it's leaves. This is caused by heat and not lack of water. If you must try your luck with this plant in hotter climates please place in a cool shady spot. Acer palmatum 'Chiba' is a wonderful plant for bonsai or an accent plant in the garden. It forms a nice small shrub slightly taller than wide. In sun, new growth appears green with rusty red margins which soon fade to solid green. In more shade, where this plant prefers to be in hot climates the red margins do not show up. The center lobe on the small leaf is much longer than the others.
