Acer palmatum ‘Sherwood Flame’ was selected by Will Curtis of Sherwood, Oregon from a seedling of 'Burgundy Lace', 'Sherwood Flame is an excellent addition to any garden. I have read many descriptions of this plant written by authors who consider this cultivar very similar to its parent. I have to respectfully disagree. At least in our climate this plant is very different. In early spring 'Sherwood Flame' may be quite purple like its parent but the rest of the year it appears much more red than burgundy. Acer palmatum ‘Oki kasane’ is a member of the Corallinum group of Japanese maples. All of these Corallinum type Japanese maples leaf out very early in the spring, and when they do, ‘Oki kasane’ has beautiful peachy orange foliage. This incredible color typically holds through April. The colors then transition to orange and then eventually green by the end of May. Much like other Corallinum type Japanese maples and maybe more than the others, ‘Oki kasane’ will usually push new growth in the summer which resembles the bright orange-red foliage of spring. This new growth on top of the olive green foliage is extremely attractive. Fall color is then orange to red.

Acer palmatum 'Higasayama' Variegated Japanese Maple

In spring, Acer palmatum 'Higasa yama' may be one of the most exciting and colorful trees you will ever see, there is nothing else quite like it. Unfortunately this intense color is short lived. As soon as temperatures start to get hot most of the variegation will fade away leaving a faint white or cream line down the center of the lobe. And when it gets really hot in our southeastern summers it will go totally green. In late summer 'Higasa yama' will send out long runners of new growth with solid green leaves much larger and differently shaped than the typical leaves. These limbs will usually put out typical leaves the next spring if not they should be removed. Fall color can be quite dramatic with reds oranges and yellows.
Our Higasayamas aren't showing much variegation this year but Higasayama is notorious for having year to year variegation volatility. If you receive a Higasayama without much variegation, it should variegate again in the future.
