Acer palmatum 'Red Dragon' is a Weeping Dwarf Japanese Maple with Brilliant Red Color Acer palmatum 'Red Dragon' is a dwarf Japanese maple that is extremely popular for its brilliant red color. 'Red Dragon' will stay more red during summer than most varieties. The coarse leaves begin the spring dark red and become more red as temperatures increase. As summer temperatures reach their peak and most other red varieties have turned green 'Red Dragon' still has a good bit of red left on it's leaves. Fall color is a dramatic crimson red. The growth habit of 'Red Dragon' is not as pendulous as other weeping cultivars, at times it grows almost prostrate. 'Red Dragon' also stays a little smaller than other dwarf Japanese maples. Acer palmatum 'Orangeola' is a Weeping Dwarf Japanese Maple that Changes Personality All Year Long Acer palmatum 'Orangeola' is one of the fastest growing weeping dwarf Japanese maple varieties there is, but it still does not attain height very quickly. 'Orangeola' has a very pendulous habit and will have quite the waterfall look as it grows. 'Orangeola' can be a fast growing weeping Japanese maple especially when young which can create long shoots of weeping branches. This growth eventually helps 'Orangeola' develop into a low mounding Japanese maple that is a great for corners and centerpieces. It emerges in the spring with heavily dissected leaves that have tones of green and orange in early spring  and as the sun works it's magic on the foliage it quickly turns brick red. About the time the entire plant becomes green in mid to late summer 'Orangeola' decides it is time to grow again, putting out red new growth that lays over the older foliage. Acer Palmatum 'Crimson Queen' is One of the Most Popular Red Dwarf Japanese Maples Acer palmatum 'Crimson Queen' is a beautiful dwarf Japanese maple that has become one of the most famous Japanese maple varieties in existence. Introduced in 1965 ‘Crimson Queen’ has become the standard by which all red, lace leaf Japanese maples are judged and probably the most common dissectum grown in America. 'Crimson Queen' is one of the very best dwarf Japanese maple varieties. Its color, when in prime leaf, is unsurpassed. 'Crimson Queen' leafs out early in spring with a lighter red color that darkens as spring progresses. 'Crimson Queen' will tolerate full sun, even in hot climates but it is much happier if it can be provided with a few hours shade during the day or indirect light. Under perfect conditions Crimson Queen can hold its red color as well or better than most cultivars. In hotter climates 'Crimson Queen' will lose its red color in the summer with the leaves turning a greenish color with a bronze hue. The fall color is then a stunning bright red. Acer palmatum 'Crimson Queen' will thrive with varying results in zones 5 through 9. The growth habit is decidedly pendulous and will form a beautiful low mound only gaining height as it matures and begins to mound over itself. 'Crimson Queen' will only grow to about 4 to 6 feet tall while growing to a larger width of 6 to 8 feet wide. Acer Palmatum 'Hana Matoi' is an Incredible Variegated Dwarf Japanese Maple Acer palmatum 'Hana matoi' is a variegated dwarf Japanese maple and is one of the most exciting Japanese Maples ever to hit the American market. The pink variegation is phenomenal especially in the spring. The variegation holds up well even in our hot climate and does not often revert like some other variegated varieties. The spring foliage emerges dark red with creamy white and pink variegation. As the temperatures rise heading into summer the base color changes from dark red to green but the wonderful pink and cream variegation remain all summer. ‘Heartbeat’ is an Australian cultivar that is just making its way into the gardening culture of the United States. 'Heartbeat' would be a great addition to any garden. The leaves are extremely dissected with lobes that are held very far apart, making the overall leaf almost appear round. The habit is very low and spreading forming a plant that is much wider than tall. Spring color is more red and less purple than other similar Japanese Maples. As summer approaches leaves turn first bronze then green but this vigorous grower seems to put on new red growth at the tips all summer long even in hot climates. Acer palmatum ‘Dr. Brown’ is a gorgeous tree with a name that doesn’t do it justice. ‘Dr. Brown’ leafs out with peach, pink, maroon, and green tones to the delicate foliage that give this tree outstanding spring color. In spring, ‘Baldsmith’ has leaves that emerge much more of a deep red than the burgundy color of most "red" Japanese Maples. Soon after, most of the leaf turns green leaving just the margins a very attractive red. The red and green of the bi color leaf at this stage makes the overall tree appear almost orange and gives it a very distinctive appearance. In some climates this look lasts well into the summer but in hotter climates where some afternoon shade would be greatly appreciated, 'Baldsmith' fades to green as summer takes hold. This cultivar out of Australia has an interesting reddish color in early spring becoming more bronze as summer approaches. Reportedly this bronze color persists most of the summer but in hotter climates the bronze fades to mostly green with a hint of the former color remaining on the leaf edges.
