Japanese Maples and Conifers

Pinus parviflora 'Regenhold Broom' is one of the few Japanese White Pines that were discovered as witches brooms. The needles are an attractive bluish green and even shorter than typical Japanese White Pines. 'Regenhold Broom' is a very slow growing pine only growing a couple inches per year.  10 Year Size: Height: 2-3 feet   Width: 2-3 feet

Acer palmatum 'Usu midori' emerges in the early spring with peachy orange colors to the leaves. These leaves eventually mature to a bright yellow color. The color of the leaves stays light as the turn a light green, chartreuse color in the summer. The fall color is a showy orange-red. 'Usu midori' has very much has a vertical, upright habit and is a fast grower.  10 Year Size: Height: 10-12 feet   Width: 4-6 feet

Acer palmatum 'Ueno homare' is a strong, upright growing Japanese maple with excellent yellow-orange color in the spring. 'Ueno homare' emerges early in the spring with the bright yellow foliage that turns to a light, chartreuse green in the summer. The leaves then turn an orange to red in the fall. 'Ueno homare' is a strong, hardy tree that can handle sun in most areas. 10 Year Size: Height: 10-12 feet   Width: 4-6 feet   

Acer shirasawanum ‘Ezo-no-momiji’ is a beautiful full moon Japanese maple with large rounded leaves that emerge bright green in the spring. These leaves then turn a darker green during the summer months. Both of these foliar colors contrast very nicely off of the light beige bark. ‘Ezo-no-momiji’ then turns a bright yellow to orange in the fall that really stands out. Acer shirasawanum ‘Ezo-no-momiji’ is a slow growing full moon Japanese maple that won’t get very tall.10 Year Size: Height: 6-8 feet Width: 3-5 feet

Acer Shirasawanum 'Johin' emerges purple in early spring with prominent green veins giving  it a very attractive and different appearance that stands out in the garden. In summer, the color becomes olive green. The growth  habit is decidedly upright. Fall color is predominantly yellow with orange markings creating a very desirable effect. The Japanese translation of johin is elegant which aptly describes this cultivar. 10 Year Size: Height: 8-10 Feet    Width:  4-6 Feet

Acer palmatum ‘Yellow Threads’ is a linearlobum type Japanese maple with yellow spring color. The stringy, thread like leaves emerge a light yellow in the spring before becoming more green in the summer. These thin leaves put on a show in the fall with golden yellow to bright orange fall color. ‘Yellow Threads’ will develop into a medium, round topped tree at maturity.10 Year Size: Height: 6-8 feet Width: 4-6 feet

'Issai nishiki momiji' is a very unique dwarf form of rough bark maple.  Issai means one year or a short period. Nishiki refers to the bark So Issai nishiki means that the bark becomes rough within the first year. Momiji means maple and therefore is repetitive when listed as 'Acer palmatum Issai nishiki momiji' and as such maybe this cultivar should only be listed as 'Issai nishiki'. Either way, this little plant is sure to delight. Very rarely available in the trade because of propagation difficulties. There is some question as to its cold hardiness. Fall color is red and orange. 10 Year size Height:  4-6  Feet    Width:  2-3 Feet

With a name that means beautiful color this introduction from Talon Buchholz can not help but be a hit. The new foliage on this little bushy cultivar emerges chartreuse edged in red. As the leaves harden off they develop a cream an pink variegation reminiscent of 'Higasa yama'. The variegation fades as summers thermometer rises leaving an attractive medium green little dwarf for the rest of summer. This little guy is most happy in morning sun and afternoon shade. 10 year size: Height: 4-6 Feet   Width: 2-3 Feet  

Acer beurgerianum ‘Angyo Weeping’ is a trident maple with a pendulous habit. ‘Angyo Weeping’ is an extremely heat tolerant weeping trident maple that provides a different texture in the garden compared with typical weeping Japanese maples. Height:  6-8 Feet    Width:  4-6 Feet

Acer palmatum ‘Emma’ is a wonderful little lace leaf Japanese maple with excellent color. ‘Emma’ leafs out in the spring with orange-red leaves that are very showy. These leaves mature to a darker maroon color that holds for most of the spring. By the time summer is at its peak, ‘Emma’ will be mostly green. Fall color is a tremendous yellow and orange. ‘Emma’ is a low, spreading, lace leaf Japanese maple that will never get very tall.10 Year Size: Height: 3-5 feet Width: 4-6 feet

A small round topped tree usually broader than tall with age. The foliage of 'Otaki' is quite large, round and deeply divided providing a great texture for the garden. In early spring leaves emerge green with a red cast and a white pubescence creating a very unique look. Like many japonicums, 'Otaki' really shines in fall when it turns first yellow then adding tones of red, orange, peach and even pink. 10 Year Size: Height:  8-10 Feet    Width:  5-7 Feet

Acer palmatum 'Chiba' is a wonderful plant for bonsai or an accent plant in the garden. It forms a nice small shrub slightly taller than wide.  In sun, new growth appears green with rusty red margins which soon fade to solid green. In more shade, where this plant prefers to be in hot climates the red margins do not show up. The center lobe on the small leaf is much longer than the others. Fall color is yellow to orange.Some consider 'Chiba' and  'Kashima' to be synonymous, and although very similar Kashima seems to be a slightly more aggressive grower putting out new growth much longer into the summer.  10 year size: Height: 4-5 Feet   Width: 3-4 Feet    

Acer palmatum ‘Aocha nishiki’ is a small tree that will become almost as wide as it is tall with age. The name translates to green-yellow but 'Aocha nishiki' is mostly known for it's creamy yellow variegation, unfortunately this almost never shows up in hot climates. Not to worry, the bright chartreuse color of early spring leaves makes this tree a great addition to any garden. If that were not enough we usually get a replay of the spring display in late summer this time it is even more striking because the new chartreuse growth really contrasts to the older green foliage. Fall color is orange to gold.10 Year size: Height:  7-9  Feet    Width:  5-7  Feet

Acer palmatum ‘Crimson Prince’ was introduced by Princeton Nurseries in 1988. This is one of many in a long line of cultivars claiming better than 'Bloodgood' status.  Being relatively fast growing 'Crimson Prince' is a very desirable red cultivar with dark purple almost black stems. The spring color is slightly more red and not as dark as 'Bloodgood' and does hold well into the summer finally turning first bronze then olive green by mid to late August in hot climates. As soon as cool nights start to show up in fall the nice dark red color quickly returns. This plant is very heavily branched and dense making it an excellent choice for a screening plant. Fall color is bright red. 10 Year Size Height:  16-20 feet    Width: 16-20 feet
