Acer palmatum ‘Katsura hime’ has some of the most remarkable yellow spring color of any Japanese maple. Similar to that of ‘Katsura’ but on steroids. ‘Katsura hime’ displays a golden color with hints of yellows and oranges that really pops in the garden. Like ‘Katsura’, ‘Katsura hime’ is one of the very first trees to emerge in spring with its bright, showy leaves. The golden colors of ‘Katsura hime’ eventually fade to a light green or chartreuse by summer. This Japanese maple with deeply divided leaves, Introduced by Vermeulen & Son Nursery in New Jersey, in 1958 has very dark purple foliage in spring and holds its color well into the summer even in hotter climates. But like most cultivars the heat will eventually turn the leaves first bronze and then to dark green. Some shading is recommended in hot climates. Probably the most outstanding feature of 'Burgundy Lace' is its mature shape, which will be much wider than tall. Pinus parviflora ‘Fukai’ is a small, upright growing Japanese white pine with variegated needles. The green needles have bands of golden yellow across them creating a striking appearance in the foliage. There are many times during the year that the foliage is a more standard blueish green, but when the variegation shows, this tree really pops.
The needles are also a little thicker with a wavy flow. ‘Fukai’ is a fairly fast grower that matures to about 6 feet tall. However, like most other pines, ‘Fukai’ can be candle pruned to keep a shorter, denser form.
