Japanese Maples and Conifers

Just like a Phoenix rises from the ashes, Acer palmatum ‘Phoenix’ rises out of dormancy with bright red leaves in the spring. This bright red color is especially contrasted by yellow-orange veining. ‘Phoenix’ is a member of the Corallinum group of Japanese maples that all typically leaf out a spectacular red before turning green for most of the spring and summer. Like the rest of the maples in this group, ‘Phoenix’ will also often have red new growth in the summer to really contrast off of the green leaves. Fall color is then orange to red. 10 Year Size: Height: 6-8 feet Width: 4-6 feet

Acer palmatum ‘Sumi nagashi’ is a matsumurae type Japanese maple tree with deeply separated lobes and serrated leaves that will make a wonderful addition to any garden. Introduced in Japan in 1930, Sumi nagashi translates to village on the river bank. 'Sumi nagashi' is fast growing and will mature eloquently. Young trees grow vase shaped an upright, becoming much more rounded and full as they age. Leaves in spring will emerge sort of maroon but will be much more red than the purple color of varieties like 'Bloodgood'. As the heat of our southern summer starts to rise the foliage will first start to turn more red, then bronze before fading to green by mid-summer. Acer palmatum ‘Red Baron’ is a fantastic, red upright Japanese maple. The spring color of ‘Red Baron’ is a beautiful burgundy that holds extremely well into the summer even in hotter climates. ‘Red Baron’ then boasts an incredible red fall color. ‘Red Baron’ is a favorite not just because of its beautiful color, but also because of its heat tolerance and its ability to handle a great deal of sun. Not only can it handle full sun in even hot climates, it also can maintain a good bit of its color even in a shadier spot. ‘Red Baron’ is also a versatile tree because it doesn’t grow too large. ‘Red Baron’ is an outstanding red upright Japanese maple that is definitely one of our favorites. 10 Year Size: Height: 10-12 feet Width: 6-8 feet

Pinus strobus ‘Hillside Winter Gold’ is an upright form of Eastern white pine with traditionally long needles. These needles are a yellowish green most of the year. However, as the temperatures cool these needles turn to a bright golden yellow. In the winter ‘Hillside Winter Gold’ is one of the most showy trees in our collection. ‘Hillside Winter Gold’ is a must have for year round interest in the garden. 10 Year Size: Height: 6-8 feet Width: 4-6 feet

'Albo Spica' is a loosely upright Crytptomeria with new foliage that is pure white creating a conifer with a surprising effect. In many climates 'Albo Spica' will tolerate full sun but in hotter climates it will appreciate partial shade. The variegation becomes more cream colored to almost nonexistent as you move the plant to more shady locations.10 year size:   Height: 3-5 Feet   Width: 2-3 Feet

Acer palmatum 'Asayake' is a dwarf lace leaf Japanese maple with yellow foliage in the spring. In addition to this incredible yellow color the leaves also have slight red edges. The leaves change to a light green in the summer. Fall color transitions from orange to bright red. 'Asayake' is a dwarf, pendulous tree that should form a low growing shrub at maturity. 'Asayake' is an introduction by our good friend Neil Ramsey.  10 Year Size: Height: 4-5 feet   Width: 4-5 feet

'Takao' has been a favorite in Japan since 1690. Large green leaves and a beautiful and graceful growth habit make this a nice tree for any garden.  However, the amazing yellow to orange fall color is what has kept this tree popular for well over 300 years.  10 Year size:  Height: 8-10 Feet Width: 8-10 Feet

Acer palmatum ‘Lima Gold’ is a dwarf Japanese maple with bright, lime-green foliage. This color holds pretty well into the summer. Fall color then ranges from bright yellow to orange. ‘Lima gold’ stays very small at maturity and maintains a dense shrubby habit. 10 Year Size: Height: 2-4 Width: 2-4

Pinus parviflora ‘Tanima no yuki’ is an outstanding dwarf Japanese white pine. This is one of the most extraordinary pines in existence and is sure to stand out in any garden. ‘Tanima no yuki’ is most known for its white variegation on younger needles, but the occasional pink cones are also quite the show stopper. ‘Tanima no yuki’ translates from Japanese to Snow of the Valley, which is a fitting name for this showy little tree. 10 Year Size: Height: 2-4 Width: 2-4

Cupressus arizonica ‘Blue Ice’ is an Arizona cypress with icy blue foliage. ‘Blue Ice’ develops into a dense, shrubby tree that grows to roughly 15 feet tall. Despite its thin foliage, ‘Blue Ice’ forms a big and full enough tree to be used as a border or screen. It is also elegant with snowy blue foliage that can be used as a center piece in the landscape.10 Year Size: Height: 14-16 feet Width: 10-12 feet

Acer palmatum ‘Tattoo’ is a fantastic dwarf Japanese maple with similar characteristics to ‘Mikawa Yatsabusa’. While similar, ‘Tattoo’ grows slower, stays smaller, and has more deeply divided leaves than ‘Mikawa yatsabusa’. ‘Tattoo’ leafs out with lime green leaves in the spring that turn to a dark green by summer. Fall color is then yellow to orange. Acer palmatum ‘Tattoo’ is one of our very favorite dwarf Japanese maples, and it is very hard to come by. 10 Year size: Height: 2-3 feet Width: 2-3 feet

Acer palmatum ‘Nebula’ is another in a long line of excellent, reticulated Japanese maples introduced by Buchholz nursery. The leaves of Nebula emerge a light pink with peach and cream variegation. The foliage fades to green by summer but maintains the darker contrasting veins. These leaves then change to a striking red color in the fall. ‘Nebula’ is a small to medium growing Japanese maple that will grow to about 8 feet tall at maturity. 10 Year Size: Height: 6-8 feet Width: 4-6 feet
