Acer palmatum ‘Sophia’ is a new introduction by Maple Ridge Nursery that was discovered as a chance seedling. ‘Sophia’ is still under observation, but there is no doubt that this is a special Japanese maple tree. ‘Sophia’ is a matsamurae type Japanese maple with thin leaves with lobes that are wider at the base. These leaves emerge in spring with a pale orange color and defined veining. As temperatures increase, the leaves turn to an attractive olive green. The leaves of ‘Sophia’ darken to a maroon color and then eventually a fiery bright red color in the fall. ‘Sophia’ is a very fast and strong grower. The name, ‘Octopus’, aptly describes this cultivar with long aching branches that spread like tentacles in all directions. 'Octopus' forms a large spreading irregular mound. 'Murasaki kiyohime' is a small maple that will grow much wider than tall, Like it's close relative 'Kiyo hime' this cultivar emerges in spring with red tips to the leaves before turning green for the summer. there are very slight differences between the 2 maples. We find that the edge of 'Murasaki kiyohime' to be more maroon red and 'Kiyo hime' to be more orange red but the tint of these colors can be affected by the sun making them hard to distinguish. Fall color ranges from bronze to orange. 'Murasaki kiyohime' is also slightly more upright when young, often sending up vertical shoots of a foot or more on very young plants only to spend the rest of it's life thickening up and growing wider. Acer palmatum ‘Sumi nagashi’ is a matsumurae type Japanese maple tree with deeply separated lobes and serrated leaves that will make a wonderful addition to any garden. Introduced in Japan in 1930, Sumi nagashi translates to village on the river bank. 'Sumi nagashi' is fast growing and will mature eloquently. Young trees grow vase shaped an upright, becoming much more rounded and full as they age. Leaves in spring will emerge sort of maroon but will be much more red than the purple color of varieties like 'Bloodgood'. As the heat of our southern summer starts to rise the foliage will first start to turn more red, then bronze before fading to green by mid-summer.
