'Shojo nomura' means "beautiful red faced monkey" and this vivid image seems to fit this wonderful small tree. Decidedly upright, 'Shojo nomura' emerges dark purple almost black in early spring but later growth is decidely red and seems to be more red than purple most of the season. It holds its color in our gardens as long as any upright palmatum we grow and if it does fade to green in very hot years it never bronzes out like other red cultivars. Also it seems to hold it's color better in shade than most varieties. Acer palmatum 'Shaina' is a very compact dwarf Japanese Maple that stays relatively small and does not take up a great amount of space. Very upright when young 'Shaina' begins to widen and fill in with age. At maturity 'Shaina' will develop into a thick and dense shrub that is about 3 to 5 feet tall and about as wide. The size and shape of 'Shaina' makes it perfect for smaller areas of the garden and is an excellent substitution for a weeping Japanese maple.
The leaves of 'Shaina' appear nice red in the spring, a true red and not the purple of some cultivars. Though reported to hold its color all summer long in some parts of the world, by mid summer in hotter climate leaves turn bronze or green but then new red growth appears at the branch tips. Fall color is a very attractive bright red. The density of 'Shaina' will often contribute to a multiple color effect where the outer branches that get more sunlight will be much more red than the inner branches that will have more green color.
Acer palmatum 'Shaina' can be grown in many different climates across the country. 'Shaina' should grow well in zones 5 through 9 and can be grown in full sun in all but the very hottest climates. In the hotter areas 'Shaina' would prefer a break from the hot afternoon sun.

Acer palmatum 'Seiryu' is known as the only upright growing lace leaf. While there are other lace leaf Japanese maples that have some upright growing habits such as 'Lionheart' and 'English Lace', there is nothing quite like 'Seiryu'. 'Seiryu' grows with a complete upright habit that grows tall just like more common upright varieties such as 'Bloodgood' or 'Red Emperor'. 'Seiryu' even grows to be one of the bigger Japanese maple varieties that we grow, making it a great specimen tree that can be the centerpiece of any garden.
Its claim to fame is that Acer palmatum 'Seiryu' is considered the only upright dissectum. This is technically correct but the dissected leaf is the only similarity between 'Seiryu' and other dissectums. Actually the leaves are so much smaller, that even the leaves do not have the appearance of other dissectums. That being said, here at Maple Ridge Nurseries we love the plant we affectionately call the "weed" because it is so easy to grow. Seiryu is a fast growing small tree that is mostly vase shaped when young growing wider and much rounder with age. The foliage appears green in spring with a slight red or pink tinge to the margins of each leaf. These margins quickly fade away leaving a very attractive medium green leaf for summer. Sometimes in late summer the colorful margins reappear, but this time a little more orange. Most literature describes the fall color as gold or yellow but I have never seen this except in photos from other parts of the world. In our climate the first cold air may give the tree an orange or red appearance but the leaves will always end up burgundy before dropping.

Acer palmatum 'Ruslyn in the Pink' has rather large leaves for a dwarf. The foliage first appears pink or orange pink in early spring depending on the amount of sunlight it receives. The foliage begins to darken to red and then purple within a few weeks. As summer takes over from spring older growth eventually fades from purple to bronze and eventually olive green. Acer palmatum ‘Red Emperor’ is a red Japanese maple tree was originally introduced by Dick Wolff at Red Maple Nursery in Pennsylvania as Emperor 1 in 1976 and much later patented under that name by someone in Oregon. Many growers grow this plant as 'Red Emperor'. It does not matter what you call it, this is a great plant.
'Red Emperor' is one of many in a long line of trees to claim the title "Better Than Bloodgood" and in some ways it is. 'Red Emperor' is rare in that it doesn't usually burn in full sun even in hotter climates. 'Red Emperor' holds its color through the summer better than most other red Japanese maple trees like 'Bloodgood'. This tree does not disappoint. Another advantage is that it usually leafs out in the spring a few days later than other red Japanese maple trees like 'Bloodgood' lessening the chance of frost damage. Acer palmatum 'Red Dragon' is a dwarf Japanese maple that is extremely popular for its brilliant red color. 'Red Dragon' will stay more red during summer than most varieties. The coarse leaves begin the spring dark red and become more red as temperatures increase. As summer temperatures reach their peak and most other red varieties have turned green 'Red Dragon' still has a good bit of red left on it's leaves. Fall color is a dramatic crimson red.
The growth habit of 'Red Dragon' is not as pendulous as other weeping cultivars, at times it grows almost prostrate. 'Red Dragon' also stays a little smaller than other dwarf Japanese maples. 'Red Dragon' will max out around 6 feet tall but will only get 4 feet tall in many instances. 'Red Dragon' will get about as wide if not wider than it is tall growing to roughly 6 feet wide.
