Acer palmatum ‘Sophia’ is a new introduction by Maple Ridge Nursery that was discovered as a chance seedling. ‘Sophia’ is still under observation, but there is no doubt that this is a special Japanese maple tree. ‘Sophia’ is a matsamurae type Japanese maple with thin leaves with lobes that are wider at the base. These leaves emerge in spring with a pale orange color and defined veining. As temperatures increase, the leaves turn to an attractive olive green. The leaves of ‘Sophia’ darken to a maroon color and then eventually a fiery bright red color in the fall. ‘Sophia’ is a very fast and strong grower. With one of the most dissected leaves you will ever see on a Japanese maple 'Red Filigree Lace' has been a highly sought after "collectors plant" for many years. Originally propagated from a chance seedling by Will Curtis in Sherwood, Oregon, this plant will become an eye-catching topic of conversation in any garden. Very pendulous the habit is mounding and very low unless staked or grafted on a standard. 'Red Filigree Lace' probably holds it' red color in summer in the Southeastern U.S. better than any red cultivar of Japanese maple. It does however require some shade. Amazingly it will hold its color even in somewhat shady conditions. Given perfect growing conditions it is not only a reliable plant but in some instances becomes quite vigorous. Unfortunately in hot climates it is very slow growing and is susceptible to over watering when young. In very early spring the delicate looking foliage is decidedly red becoming darker purple in summer before turning crimson in fall. Do not let the intricate finely cut lacy leaf fool you, as long as you provide a well-drained environment 'Red Filigree Lace' is a very sturdy and hardy plant that any gardener should feel lucky to have.

A fast growing cultivar that comes out more orange red than purple red in early spring but rapidly darkens as it is exposed to the spring sun, 'Oshio beni' is a strong grower. It will not hold it's color as long into the hot summers of the Southeast as well as some other cultivars, turning green by late June in Atlanta. What 'Oshio beni' lacks in summer color it more than makes up for in the fall when the foliage turns a bright orange red. The name means the great red tide.

It is still popular today although competition from varieties that hold color longer into summer has caused production to decrease. Acer palmatum ‘Hime Shojo’ is an awesome little Japanese maple discovered in Japan before 1994 that is a really exciting addition to the U.S. market. While the new growth is a very bright almost cherry red the small deeply divided leaves soon harden off to the classic dark maroon that the Japanese refer to as shojo. This continues much of the summer, although a relatively small plant, 'Hime shojo' seems to put on bright red new growth much of the year. This dense little shrubby tree holds its color very well long into the summer and even all summer long in cooler parts of its range. Although the best colors are achieved in full sun, and it will tolerate full sun in most areas, a little shade at some part of the day is appreciated in hotter climates. Fall color is a bright cherry red and better than many small cultivars.
