Acer palmatum ‘Little Sango’ is a dwarf, coral bark Japanese Maple. ‘Little Sango’ has many of the same characteristics of the popular Sango kaku but on a much smaller tree. ‘Little Sango’ will only grow to be about 4 feet tall with a dense, bushy habit. ‘Little Sango’ has light green leaves in the spring and summer that turn to a golden yellow in the fall.

Acer palmatum ‘Japanese Princess’ is one of the most exciting dwarf Japanese maples in existence right now. ‘Japanese Princess’ is from the Mikawa Yatsabusa family, meaning that it has short internodal lengths on the branches which creates a stacking effect of the leaves. ‘Japanese Princess’ emerges with a bright red color to the leaves. The red is highlighted by white pubescence. The red color of the leaves quickly transitions to a yellowish orange which remains for the rest of the spring. By summer, the color of the leaves fades to a light green color. Fall color is a bright orange to red.

Acer palmatum ‘Anticipation’ is a Maple Ridge Nursery introduction that we have had some fun with over the past few years. It is a beautiful red lace leaf that seems to have an irregular growth habit. It’s most unique feature however, is how late this tree emerges in the spring. This is where the name ‘Anticipation comes from. ‘Anticipation’ routinely waits until the middle to end of April here in Georgia to leaf out, easily the last cultivar at our nursery to do so. There were many years that we thought the tree was dead because it had been so long. This may not seem like a benefit at first, but this trait protects ‘Anticipation’ from any late freezes or frosts. Regardless of the tree’s quirks, ‘Anticipation’ is a beautiful Japanese maple that has excellent red color in the spring that holds quite well throughout the summer even in the heat. Fall color is then a nice bright red. The growth habit is still something we are evaluating, but thus far to have a rather unique shape while becoming the same size as most other Japanese maples in this category. 10 Year Size: Height: 4-6 feet Width: 4-6 feet

Yama hime means dwarf mountain which adequately describes this small mounding shrub. The long slender lobes appear in spring edged in red. As summer approaches the leaves turn to a dark green. This cultivar, like 'Shishio hime', seems to be a lower growing more spreading version than some of the other maples of this type. The leaves transition to solid green by late spring. This little maple with very fine dissected leaves is an excellent addition to any garden. Among dissectums only 'Red filigree Lace' and 'Beni komo no su' have finer foliage. 'Red Feathers' does seem to grow faster than it's fine leafed cousins. Starting very bright red in spring the foliage darkens with the heat of summer turning green in hot climates before putting on a wonderful crimson show in fall. Discovered in 1980 and introduced in 1995 by John Vermeullen and Sons nursery this plant was actually a seedling off of the original 'Burgundy Lace' (also a John Vermeullen and Sons introduction in 1945). During evaluation this plant was labeled Rilas Red and occasionally this plant will show up with this incorrect name, leading one to believe that some plants escaped the nursery before introduction.

Acer palmatum 'Cupid' is a dwarf coral bark Japanese maple that was discovered as a witches broom from a large coral bark Japanese maple. 'Cupid' has all of the usual characteristics of a coral bark Japanese maple with red bark in the winter time and green leaves in the spring and summer. The fall color of 'Cupid' is bright yellow to orange. 'Cupid' grows with a compact and dense nature and will only develop into a dwarf tree at maturity. 'Cupid' is an excellent coral bark Japanese maple for anyone interested in adding a coral bark Japanese maple to their garden, but they are concerned with the space that a traditional 'Sango kaku' coral bark Japanese maple requires.

The leaves of ‘Dai’ are quite fine compared to other similar lace leaf Japanese maples. ‘Dai’ emerges in spring with a bright red color to the foliage with pink and orange undertones. ‘Dai’ then turns green by summer. ‘Dai’ then shows out again in the fall with an array of fiery reds and oranges. ‘Dai’ is a small growing Japanese maple with a strong weeping habit.
