Dwarf Japanese Maples

The new leaves in spring are light green almost yellow and darken as they age giving the entire tree a two-toned effect that is quite striking. Although we do not recommend this plant for full sun in the Southeast, if you place it where it can get direct morning or late evening sun the new growth as it first appears will be tinted red. The growth habit is very pendulous and fall color ranges from gold to orange but is always spectacular. 10 Year Size:   Height:  3-4 Feet    Width:  4-5 Feet

Acer palmatum 'Ryugu' is a very exciting variegated Japanese maple. 'Ryugu' has about as much variegation to the leaves as any other Japanese maple. The speckled white variegation is quite consistent and should persist year over year. The other thing that is so interesting about this Japanese maple is it's dwarf, compact growth habit. 'Ryugu' will stay quite small with a dense and compact habit. The leaves are green with mostly creamy white variegation speckled all over the leaves. When fall comes 'Ryugu' catches on fire with very bright orange-red color. 10 Year Size: Height: 3-5 feet   Width: 2-4 feet

Acer palmatum ‘Japanese Princess’ is one of the most exciting dwarf Japanese maples in existence right now. ‘Japanese Princess’ is from the Mikawa Yatsabusa family, meaning that it has short internodal lengths on the branches which creates a stacking effect of the leaves. ‘Japanese Princess’ emerges with a bright red color to the leaves. The red is highlighted by white pubescence. The red color of the leaves quickly transitions to a yellowish orange which remains for the rest of the spring. By summer, the color of the leaves fades to a light green color. Fall color is a bright orange to red. The name, ‘Octopus’, aptly describes this cultivar with long aching branches that spread like tentacles in all directions. 'Octopus' forms a large spreading irregular mound. The deeply dissected leaves emerge a bright pink red in early spring before turning to dark purple. When summers heat arrives the leaves first bronze before becoming mostly dark green in hot climates. Great small maple that will grow  wider than tall, 'Tama hime' emerges in spring with orange tips to the leaves before turning green for the summer. Fall color ranges from bronze to orange. 10 year size: Height: 1-2 Feet   Width: 2-3 Feet

Acer palmatum 'Asayake' is a dwarf lace leaf Japanese maple with yellow foliage in the spring. In addition to this incredible yellow color the leaves also have slight red edges. The leaves change to a light green in the summer. Fall color transitions from orange to bright red. 'Asayake' is a dwarf, pendulous tree that should form a low growing shrub at maturity. Acer palmatum ‘Lima Gold’ is a dwarf Japanese maple with bright, lime-green foliage. This color holds pretty well into the summer. Fall color then ranges from bright yellow to orange. ‘Lima gold’ stays very small at maturity and maintains a dense shrubby habit. 10 Year Size: Height: 2-4 Width: 2-4

Acer palmatum ‘Tattoo’ is a fantastic dwarf Japanese maple with similar characteristics to ‘Mikawa Yatsabusa’. While similar, ‘Tattoo’ grows slower, stays smaller, and has more deeply divided leaves than ‘Mikawa yatsabusa’. ‘Tattoo’ leafs out with lime green leaves in the spring that turn to a dark green by summer. Fall color is then yellow to orange. Acer palmatum ‘Tattoo’ is one of our very favorite dwarf Japanese maples, and it is very hard to come by. 10 Year size: Height: 2-3 feet Width: 2-3 feet

Acer palmatum ‘Bewely’s Red’ is a beautiful red lace leaf Japanese maple. This Dissectum is unique in that it grows more upright than most other lace leaf varieties. ‘Bewely’s Red’ has wonderful red leaves in spring that hold their color well throughout the year. ‘Bewely’s Red’ also performs well in full sun even in hot climates.10 Year Size: Height: 6-8 feet Width: 6-8 feet

'Stella Rossa' translates to Red Star. The habit of this cultivar is decidedly weeping, delicate and graceful. While it tolerates full sun, 'Stella Rossa' would like to have a little shade in hotter climates. The foliage of 'Stella Rossa' emerges bright red in early spring holding the bright red color well into summer before turning darker red and eventually burgundy. In very hot climates it turns bronze by September but never totally green like most other red maples in our nursery. While it may be a little slower growing than many of the dissectums it holds its bright red color in the Southeast better than almost every other cultivar. The foliage of ’Adrian’s Compact’ is predominantly burgundy but is highlighted by the bright red of the new leaves.
