Acer palmatum 'Sekka yatsubusa' Dwarf Japanese Maple
from $39.00
Acer palmatum ‘Sekka yatsubusa’ has short internodal lengths that give this small plant a very different appearance as the leaves are bunched up along the stems. Red edges to the deeply divided leaves and red petioles add to the effect. All though very slow when young this small tree can grow quite vigorously under the right conditions. Once the tree gets a little older it begins to develop very interesting fasciations or flattened stems of congested growth. While like most maples 'Sekka yatsubusa' is happy in partial shade this adaptable cultivar does quite well in heavy shade or in full sun in all but the hottest climates. Fall color is usually red and very good, some years it can be quite stunning.

Very upright when young 'Shaina' begins to widen with age. I have grown this wonderful little cultivar in full sun even in Decatur, GA although like most Japanese maples it would appreciate some break from the sun during the day in hotter climates. Leaves appear nice red in the spring, a true red and not the purple of some cultivars. Though reported to hold its color all summer long in some parts of the world, by mid summer in our climate leaves turn bronze or green but then new red growth appears at the branch tips.
