Acer palmatum 'Mayday' is one of the most sought after Japanese Maples currently on the market. 'Mayday' is a Mikawa yatsabusa variant with bright yellow color in the spring. Throughout the summer this yellow turns to a light green and can sometimes show subtle variegation. 'Mayday' grows just like Mikawa yatsabusa with short nodes and bunched up buds creating a shingled leaf effect. 'Mayday' is a slower grower than Mikawa yatsabusa and will only reach a few feet tall at maturity. This is an extremely rare Japanese maple that will likely always be in short supply.

One of the best dwarf maples, 'Mikawa yatsubusa' is very slow growing with closely arranged leaves that create a wonderful stubby upright tree. Short inter nodal lengths with leaves that layer over one another not only define this elegant small tree but make it difficult to propagate and quite rare in nurseries. Fall color can range from bright yellow to spectacular red. This great little plant was found in the 1970s in the Tōkai region of Japan and named after the old Mikawa province there.

Acer palmatum ‘Miss Piggy’ is one of the most unusual Japanese maples that we grow at Maple Ridge Nursery. ‘Miss Piggy’ is a dwarf tree with sturdy branching and bunched up leaves that are caused by fasciations at the tips of the branches. These fasciations usually seen in conifers and are extremely rare in Japanese maples. The leaves can sometimes grow so close together that they completely encircle the branches. When this occurs, you can look straight down the branch and see a perfect ring of leaves that almost make it look like an eye. ‘Miss Piggy’ has green foliage most of the year until fall when the leaves turn an attractive orange. 10 Year Size: Height: 4-6 feet Width: 2-4 feet

'Murasaki kiyohime' is a small maple that will grow much wider than tall, Like it's close relative 'Kiyo hime' this cultivar emerges in spring with red tips to the leaves before turning green for the summer. there are very slight differences between the 2 maples. We find that the edge of 'Murasaki kiyohime' to be more maroon red and 'Kiyo hime' to be more orange red but the tint of these colors can be affected by the sun making them hard to distinguish. Fall color ranges from bronze to orange. 'Murasaki kiyohime' is also slightly more upright when young, often sending up vertical shoots of a foot or more on very young plants only to spend the rest of it's life thickening up and growing wider. Acer palmatum 'O jishi' Lion's Head Japanese Maple

Acer palmatum ‘O jishi’ is one of the famous lions head maples. 'O jishi' is the male lion and 'Meijishi' is the female lion. Shishigashira means lions head, and while this term can be used to describe either cultivar it is generally used to describe 'Meijishi'. The leaves of 'Ojishi' are heavily crinkled but lighter in color and not quite as tightly crinkled as 'Meijishi'. 'O jishi' is also a much slower growing smaller tree. In full sun new growth has a red tinge to the tips of the foliage. Fall color is red and glorious. The leaves appear very crowded on the stem giving the tree a compact and congested look, with the short internodal length making it hard to propagate and contributing to the fact that it is rarely seen in nurseries.
