Developed by Koichiro Wada Nursery, Japan before 1938 'Butterfly' has striking variegation. Frequent pruning is recommended to thin inner branching as it gets older, in order to prevent it from becoming to congested. Fall color is orange. There does appear to be two different cultivars being sold under the name 'Butterfly', while they are similar there is enough difference to indicate that they are distinctively different cultivars. One has pink and yellow variegation in early spring while the other one is pink and creamy white. Later in the season the variegation in both appear white. Butterfly does better in partial shade and in warmer climates the pink fades as summer temperatures rise.

Discovered by Ed "Skeeter" Rod in Pennsylvania this is a witches broom with the usual twiggy growth but a very vigorous upright habit. The small attractive leaves emerge bright red in spring before turning dark red in summer. This plant holds it's color very well even in hot climates. It also seems to hold color well in fairly heavy shade. Acer palmatum ‘Sekka yatsubusa’ has short internodal lengths that give this small plant a very different appearance as the leaves are bunched up along the stems. Red edges to the deeply divided leaves and red petioles add to the effect. All though very slow when young this small tree can grow quite vigorously under the right conditions. Once the tree gets a little older it begins to develop very interesting fasciations or flattened stems of congested growth. While like most maples 'Sekka yatsubusa' is happy in partial shade this adaptable cultivar does quite well in heavy shade or in full sun in all but the hottest climates. Fall color is usually red and very good, some years it can be quite stunning.

Acer palmatum ‘Hogyoku’ is an upright, green Japanese maple with very attractive foliage. 'Hogyoku' is mostly known for its pumpkin orange fall color. In warmer climates it sometimes has yellow leaves in the fall that have orange and red washed across them. Hogyoku matures into a compact stocky tree over time and is somewhat slower growing than other similar trees. The thick green leaves have a little flip or curve to the leaf margins giving the tree a wonderful texture that compliments almost any garden setting. Hogyoku tolerates full sun in all but the hottest climates. A perennial favorite introduced in Japan prior to 1882.

Acer palmatum ‘Gable’s Glory’ is a fascinating Japanese maple with some incredible color changes. ‘Gable’s Glory’ first emerges in the spring with bright red, broad leaves. This is a stunning color that persists through the spring. As the temperatures rise, ‘Gable’s Glory’ changes to a bronze-red color. The color of the leaves continues to get lighter until they are nearly yellow in the peak of summer. Acer palmatum 'Spring Blast' has some of the most dramatically bright spring color of any Japanese maple ever in existence. 'Spring Blast' is aptly named due to the blast of color that this Japanese maple exhibits in the spring. 'Spring Blast' emerges in the spring with shining white leaves with green veins and bright hot pink edges around each leaf. This pink edging is think and covers a large portion of the leaf. 'Spring Blast' has reticulated variegation with the green veining and yellowish white base color to the leaves. As the season progresses the pink edging does fade and makes way for the reticulated variegation to take center stage. 'Spring Blast' has jagged edges that are very similar to the majority of the "ghost" varieties. The reticulated variegation remains even throughout the hot summer. During the summer the colors are mostly white leaves with green veining. Fall color is an attractive orange color.

Born in Louisiana, Acer palmatum ‘Akin’s E.P.’ is an excellent grower even in our extreme summer heat. ‘Akin’s E.P.’ has small, palmate leaves that emerge a deep red or maroon in the spring. The color of these leaves fades somewhat in the summer as all maples do in the heat, however ‘Akin’s E.P.’ will hold most of its spring color given a little afternoon shade. Acer palmatum ‘Verkade’s Jacus Potus’ is among a rare category of Japanese maple called Sessilifolium. These Japanese maples are known for their thin, feather like leaves. ‘Verkade’s Jacus Potus’ has excellent colors on these unique leaves. The leaves emerge deep red in the spring. The leaves then turn to a yellowish green in the summer. Acer palmatum 'Chitose yama' (Ex bury) Rare Japanese Maple

Unfortunately, there are two trees grown with the name 'Chitose yama'. The original, a red clone from Japan dating back to the list of 1882 and this one, a green clone, named at Ex bury gardens in England around 1990. The name refers to the mountains near the town of Chitose on the Japanese island of Hokkaido. Since this tree has no legitimate claim to the name being second, we refer to it as Chitose yama "Ex bury form". All that aside, this is a wonderful tree. Good enough to win the Royal Horticulture Society Award of Garden Merritt in 1993. In early spring the leaves emerge a distinctive pale green with red tips covered with a white pubescence. If this weren't striking enough the entire tree is usually covered with an abundance of beautiful little red blooms. As temperatures warm and summer approaches the heavily textured leaves turn olive green complimented by the now ripe red samaras adorning the tree. As if all this were not enough, the real show starts in fall when this form of Chitose yama turns a traffic stopping bright red that literally glows. Starting in early spring with bright pink leaves the reticulation becomes more pronounced and the leaves become more red as spring progresses. In summer the leaves darken and become more purple while the prominent black veins remain. While more sun tolerant than other reticulated varieties this cultivar still appreciates some shade especially in hotter climates. Fall color is orange and spectacular.
