Acer palmatum 'Mikawa kaen' is the Golden Mikawa Dwarf Japanese Maple Acer palmatum 'Mikawa kaen' is a dwarf Japanese maple that is a relative to the ever popular 'Mikawa yatsubusa'. 'Mikawa kaen' is slow growing with closely arranged leaves that create a wonderful stubby upright tree. The defining characteristic of 'Mikawa kaen' is the short inter nodal lengths and closely growing buds that create a stacked shingle like appearance of the leaves. 'Mikawa kaen' stays a little bit smaller than 'Mikawa yatsubusa' 'Mikawa kaen' has broad leaves that lay flat and close together. While the leaf shape and structure is quite similar to 'Mikawa yatsubusa', 'Mikawa kaen' has some differences in leaf color. The leaf color of this interested dwarf Japanese maple tree is gold to bronze in the spring. The leaves then change to green for most of the summer. 'Mikawa kaen' has incredible fall color ranging from orange to red. While it may be slow growing, 'Mikawa kaen' is still a hardy tree and can be grown in many different climates across the country. 'Mikawa kaen' can be comfortably grown in zones 5 through 9. 'Mikawa kaen' can be grown in full sun in some climates, but will prefer some afternoon shade in the hotter locations. Unfortunately, there are two trees grown with the name 'Chitose yama'. The original, a red clone from Japan dating back to the list of 1882 and this one, a green clone, named at Ex bury gardens in England around 1990. The name refers to the mountains near the town of Chitose on the Japanese island of Hokkaido.  Since this tree has no legitimate claim to the name being second, we refer to it as Chitose yama "Ex bury form".  All that aside, this is a wonderful tree. Good enough to win the Royal Horticulture Society Award of Garden Merritt in 1993. In early spring the leaves emerge a distinctive  pale green with red tips covered with a white pubescence. If this weren't striking enough the entire tree is usually covered with an abundance of beautiful little red blooms. As temperatures warm and summer approaches the heavily textured leaves turn olive green complimented by the now ripe red samaras adorning the tree. As if all this were not enough, the real show starts in fall when this form of Chitose yama turns a traffic stopping bright red that literally glows. Acer palmatum 'Kiyohime' is a Fantastic Compact Dwarf Japanese Maple Perfect for Small Landscapes, Containers, and Bonsai Acer palmatum 'Kiyohime' is a compact dwarf Japanese maple that will grow much wider than tall. For a plant that never gets much more than 2 feet tall 'Kiyohime' is relatively fast growing and will become a specimen in the garden after just a few years. The dense and lateral growth habit make 'Kiyohime' almost look like a table at maturity. The size and shape make 'Kiyohime' a perfect companion Japanese maple for different spaces in the landscape. 'Kiyohime' does not require a great deal of sunlight and can be grown in mostly shade in pretty much any climate. Acer palmatum 'Kiyohime' is a perfect dwarf Japanese maple for bonsai for a number of reasons. The growth habit of 'Kiyohime' may make it look like small shrub in the ground but in a bonsai pot 'Kiyohime' looks like the miniature version of a full size tree. The small leaves of 'Kiyohime' help to create this effect as well. The natural density will also contribute to this affect and will require minimal pruning and attention. Acer palmatum ‘Dragon’s Fire’ is an awesome lace leaf Japanese maple that leafs out bright, fiery red before turning peach, then burgundy, then green in the summer. ‘Dragon’s Fire’ then turns bright orange to red in the fall. Acer Palmatum 'Hana Matoi' is an Incredible Variegated Dwarf Japanese Maple Acer palmatum 'Hana matoi' is a variegated dwarf Japanese maple and is one of the most exciting Japanese Maples ever to hit the American market. The pink variegation is phenomenal especially in the spring. The variegation holds up well even in our hot climate and does not often revert like some other variegated varieties. The spring foliage emerges dark red with creamy white and pink variegation. As the temperatures rise heading into summer the base color changes from dark red to green but the wonderful pink and cream variegation remain all summer. The fall color for 'Hana matoi' is also remarkable as the foliage changes to a bright cherry red that lights up in the landscape. The colors of 'Hana matoi' will perform best in partially sunny areas or with morning sun and afternoon shade. Acer palmatum ‘Manyo no sato’ is a wonderfully funky maple with the Japanese name that means "village of 10,000 leaves". ‘Manyo no sato’ is very similar to 'Beni shien'. In early spring the irregularly shaped leaves emerge cream and purple. Leaves become more purple and green with cream before the purple starts to fade in summer. While fairly sun tolerant this cultivar prefers some shade in hotter climates. In more sun the red colors become more prominent while in more shade the variegation becomes much more subtle. Fall color is red to orange and very pleasing. 10 year size:  Height: 6-8 Feet   Width: 4-6 Feet

Acer palmatum ‘Sekka yatsubusa’ has short internodal lengths that give this small plant a very different appearance as the leaves are bunched up along the stems. Red edges to the deeply divided leaves and red petioles add to the effect. All though very slow when young this small tree can grow quite vigorously under the right conditions. Once the tree gets a little older it begins to develop very interesting fasciations or flattened stems of congested growth. While like most maples 'Sekka yatsubusa' is happy in partial shade this adaptable cultivar does quite well in heavy shade or in full sun in all but the hottest climates. Acer palmatum 'Ukigumo' is the famous "Floating Cloud" maple. In early spring dazzling  foliage opens speckled with pink and white. In summer the pink fades leaving only a dusting of white to hint at its former spring glory. Unfortunately in areas with hotter climates the variegation is not nearly as well developed and some years does not show at all. Oh the anticipation of a gardener in a hot climate hoping each spring that this will be the year that his prized "Floating Cloud" will actually show its colors. If you do actually get to see variegation in early spring in these hot locations it is fleeting at best as it will fade to green quickly leaving the gardener waiting and wanting until next spring. Compact and upright when young 'Ukigumo' matures into a beautiful small round topped tree. Fall color is generally orange. Our Ukigumos aren't showing much variegation this year but Ukigumo is notorious for having year to year variegation volatility. Acer palmatum ‘Nishiki gawa’ is an upright growing Japanese maple with green leaves. The most remarkable thing about ‘Nishiki gawa’ is the rough, pine bark the tree develops with age. This is a very unique look compared to the majority of Japanese maples that have smooth bark. ‘Nishiki gawa’ has a vibrant orange fall color.10 Year Size: Height: 10-12 feet Width: 6-8 feet

Deeply divided leaves appear light green in spring. Foliage turns slightly darker for summer. In fall the real show starts with orange, red and even yellow making an appearance. White striations appear on the bark and become quite prominent when older. 'Fascination' is fast growing, forming a large round topped tree with age.
