Very similar to 'Sango kaku' but smaller, 'Winter Flame' can vary greatly under different growing conditions. If stressed this little guy hardly grows at all and can be a little finicky. If happy in its environment it can actually grow fairly quick although still a good bit slower than 'Sango kaku'. We find that giving it well drained soil and adequate moisture is the key to happiness for this little maple. Spring color is lime green becoming darker in summer and then yellow to orange and yellow in fall. This is a very rare reticulated leaf form dissectum. The new leaves in spring are light green sometimes almost white with dark veins. A great plant for many parts of the world. Although very beautiful 'Filigree' is more of a collector plant in hotter climates as summers heat will really do a number on it around August, causing it to drop a large percentage of it's leaves. This is caused by heat and not lack of water. If you must try your luck with this plant in hotter climates please place in a cool shady spot.
