Acer palmatum ‘Anna’s Broom’ is a dwarf Japanese maple with uniquely shaped leaves. The leaves are much more divided than most dwarf varieties of this style. These leaves emerge bright red in the spring before maturing to a burgundy in late spring. By summer, most of the leaves turn to a dark green. Late summer then brings more bright red new growth. This Japanese maple with deeply divided leaves, Introduced by Vermeulen & Son Nursery in New Jersey, in 1958 has very dark purple foliage in spring and holds its color well into the summer even in hotter climates. But like most cultivars the heat will eventually turn the leaves first bronze and then to dark green. Some shading is recommended in hot climates. Probably the most outstanding feature of 'Burgundy Lace' is its mature shape, which will be much wider than tall. Also very attractive is the way in which the red petioles contrast with the purple foliage in spring. Fall color is bright red.

'Rikuzen shidare' has a weeping habit and grows similarly to Ryu sei. It will only grow as tall as it is staked and will weep down to the ground from there. Where it differs from Ryusei is in it's stunning large leaves. The leaves on Rikuzen shidare have a similar shape to an upright grower called 'Osakazuki'. Fall color on Rikuzen shidare is also different from Ryusei as it goes yellow in the fall verses red.

Acer palmatum 'Ao Shidare' Green Lace Leaf Japanese Maple

The name simply means green cascading which perfectly describes this great little tree. In spring the green color has a slightly blue tint that separates it from other green dissectums. At one time all green dissectums were probably called 'Ao shidare' but over time this cultivar became dominant and rightly so. Growth is very strong and pendulous. Ao shidare will tolerate full sun better than most green dissectum cultivars but could still benefit from some shade in hotter climates.
