Acer japonicum ‘Fairy lights’ has the most finely dissected foliage of any of the japonicums. Acer palmatum 'Asayake' is a dwarf lace leaf Japanese maple with yellow foliage in the spring. In addition to this incredible yellow color the leaves also have slight red edges. The leaves change to a light green in the summer. Fall color transitions from orange to bright red. 'Asayake' is a dwarf, pendulous tree that should form a low growing shrub at maturity. Acer palmatum ‘Autumn Fire’ grows more prostrate than pendulous forming a beautiful mushroom shaped mound. The new spring foliage emerges light green edged in pink. As summer arrives the pink fades and the green leaves become darker. In spring, ‘Baldsmith’ has leaves that emerge much more of a deep red than the burgundy color of most "red" Japanese Maples. Soon after, most of the leaf turns green leaving just the margins a very attractive red. The red and green of the bi color leaf at this stage makes the overall tree appear almost orange and gives it a very distinctive appearance. In some climates this look lasts well into the summer but in hotter climates where some afternoon shade would be greatly appreciated, 'Baldsmith' fades to green as summer takes hold. Acer palmatum ‘Bewely’s Red’ is a beautiful red lace leaf Japanese maple. This Dissectum is unique in that it grows more upright than most other lace leaf varieties. ‘Bewely’s Red’ has wonderful red leaves in spring that hold their color well throughout the year. ‘Bewely’s Red’ also performs well in full sun even in hot climates.10 Year Size: Height: 6-8 feet Width: 6-8 feet

‘Disscetum Nigrum’ is known for the silver hairs covering the emerging foliage in early spring,  this old cultivar is a great addition to any garden. Although originally found in Japan, 'Dissectum Nigrum' was named in the Netherlands in 1938. Spring color is dark red and holds well into the summer in most areas but does bronze before turning an attractive olive green rather quickly in hot climates. Fall color is bright red. Acer palmatum ‘Dr. Brown’ is a gorgeous tree with a name that doesn’t do it justice. ‘Dr. Brown’ leafs out with peach, pink, maroon, and green tones to the delicate foliage that give this tree outstanding spring color. This color eventually fades to green in the summer and then changes to bright orange in the fall. ‘Dr. Brown’ has a very weeping habit that keeps this tree relatively small at maturity. 10 Year Size: Height: 3-5 feet Width: 4-6 feet

Acer palmatum 'Eye of the Tiger' is a dwarf Japanese maple with delicate lacy leaves. These small leaves emerge in spring with a light red to almost peachy color. By summer the leaves turn to a light green. Summer flushes of new growth offer more splashes of the vibrant spring color across the foliage. Fall color is then a bright red. This is a very rare reticulated leaf form dissectum. The new leaves in spring are light green sometimes almost white with dark veins. A great plant for many parts of the world. Although very beautiful 'Filigree' is more of a collector plant in hotter climates as summers heat will really do a number on it around August,  causing it to drop a large percentage of it's leaves. This is caused by heat and not lack of water. If you must try your luck with this plant in hotter climates please place in a cool shady spot. Acer palmatum 'Garnet' will Provide Great Red Color for a Weeping Dwarf Japanese Maple in Full Sun Acer palmatum ‘Garnet’ is a great weeping dwarf Japanese maple for red color. ‘Garnet’ emerges a light red color in spring which deepens and holds through most of the summer. The leaves on this beautifully shaped tree then brighten to a bright garnet red color in fall. 'Garnet' is one of our favorite red lace leaf varieties for warmer climates. 'Garnet' is a weeping dwarf Japanese maple that can handle full sun even in these warmer areas. Acer palmatum 'Garnet' does a great job of holding its red color in full sun despite warmer temperatures. 'Garnet' doesn't just grow well in warm climates though as it will grow very well in zones 5 through 10. ‘Garnet’ matures into a wonderful mound shape that is as wide as it is tall. 'Garnet' grows a little larger than some other dwarf Japanese maples but it still should only reach about 6 feet tall at maturity. ‘Germaine’s Gyration’ was discovered by Bob Vandermoss and introduced by Andre Iselli for his mother Germaine. This outstanding dissectum variety does well in the south, tolerating even full sun. This is important because most green dissectums will not tolerate full sun as far south as Atlanta. Germaine's Gyration will become much wider than tall with the inner branching swirling around the main trunk in different directions making it obvious where the gyration part of the name came from. The outer form of the tree however is a very pleasant and fairly symmetrical mound. Acer palmatum ‘Green Globe’ is a green, lace leaf Japanese maple that does not have as much of a weeping habit as most lace leaf Japanese maples. ‘Green Globe’ has green leaves in the spring and summer. Fall color is yellow to orange. ‘Green Globe’ has an upright and spreading habit that forms a short, round topped tree. 10 Year Size: Height: 6-8 feet Width: 6-8 feet

Acer palmatum ‘Green Spider’ is a very nice green lace leaf with a very pendulous habit. Leaves emerge light green in the spring and hold an attractive green color throughout the summer. The leaves then turn from orange to red in the fall. 10 Year Size: Height: 3-5 feet Width: 3-5 feet

The new leaves in spring are light green almost yellow and darken as they age giving the entire tree a two-toned effect that is quite striking. Although we do not recommend this plant for full sun in the Southeast, if you place it where it can get direct morning or late evening sun the new growth as it first appears will be tinted red.
