Acer palmatum ‘Beni Shien’ is possibly the most unique maple introduced in the last fifty years. Harold Johnson of Tallahassee, Alabama introduced this wonderful variegated Japanese maple born of the south and then gave it a Japanese name that translates to red smoke. The deeply divided leaves emerge more purple than anything else, but will have cream markings starting at the base of the leaf and extending along the margins of most of the lobes. In summer the purple of spring will change to olive green in more shade or bronze in more sun. In late summer new red growth will pop out all over the plant. Fall color is usually orange or red. The really cool thing is that no two leaves will be shaped the same.

Acer palmatum ‘Manyo no sato’ is a wonderfully funky maple with the Japanese name that means "village of 10,000 leaves". ‘Manyo no sato’ is very similar to 'Beni shien'. In early spring the irregularly shaped leaves emerge cream and purple. Leaves become more purple and green with cream before the purple starts to fade in summer. While fairly sun tolerant this cultivar prefers some shade in hotter climates. In more sun the red colors become more prominent while in more shade the variegation becomes much more subtle. Fall color is red to orange and very pleasing.

Acer palmatum 'Spring Blast' has some of the most dramatically bright spring color of any Japanese maple ever in existence. 'Spring Blast' is aptly named due to the blast of color that this Japanese maple exhibits in the spring. 'Spring Blast' emerges in the spring with shining white leaves with green veins and bright hot pink edges around each leaf. This pink edging is think and covers a large portion of the leaf. 'Spring Blast' has reticulated variegation with the green veining and yellowish white base color to the leaves. As the season progresses the pink edging does fade and makes way for the reticulated variegation to take center stage. 'Spring Blast' has jagged edges that are very similar to the majority of the "ghost" varieties. The reticulated variegation remains even throughout the hot summer. During the summer the colors are mostly white leaves with green veining. Fall color is an attractive orange color.

Acer palmatum 'Ikandi' Variegated Japanese Maple

Acer palmatum ‘Ikandi’ is an extremely variegated Japanese maple discovered as a chance seedling from Acer palmatum ‘Alpenweiss’ by Talon Buchholz. The leaves on ‘Ikandi emerge almost entirely pink before the green and white develop around the veins. The pink variegation fades to green and creamy white by summer time and eventually will turn orange to red in the fall. ‘Ikandi’ needs to be protected from the hot afternoon sun, but morning or dappled sun help to provide excellent color to the variegated leaves in the spring. Acer palmatum 'Butterfly' Variegated Japanese Maple

Developed by Koichiro Wada Nursery, Japan before 1938 'Butterfly' has striking variegation. Frequent pruning is recommended to thin inner branching as it gets older, in order to prevent it from becoming to congested. Fall color is orange. There does appear to be two different cultivars being sold under the name 'Butterfly', while they are similar there is enough difference to indicate that they are distinctively different cultivars. One has pink and yellow variegation in early spring while the other one is pink and creamy white. Later in the season the variegation in both appear white. Butterfly does better in partial shade and in warmer climates the pink fades as summer temperatures rise.

Acer palmatum 'Ukigumo' is the famous "Floating Cloud" maple. In early spring dazzling foliage opens speckled with pink and white. In summer the pink fades leaving only a dusting of white to hint at its former spring glory. Unfortunately in areas with hotter climates the variegation is not nearly as well developed and some years does not show at all. Oh the anticipation of a gardener in a hot climate hoping each spring that this will be the year that his prized "Floating Cloud" will actually show its colors. If you do actually get to see variegation in early spring in these hot locations it is fleeting at best as it will fade to green quickly leaving the gardener waiting and wanting until next spring. Acer palmatum ‘Dark Ghost’ is the newest member of the “Ghost” series. ‘Dark Ghost’ is a reticulated Japanese maple just like the rest of the “Ghosts”. Unsurprisingly, ‘Dark Ghost’ has the darkest purple leaves of any of the other ghost varieties. ‘Dark Ghost’ is even a darker purple than ‘Purple Ghost’. ‘Dark Ghost’ also has a larger leaf than many of the other ghost varieties. Acer palmatum ‘Dark Ghost’ leafs out in the spring with a deep purple-red color with reticulated veining. This color holds pretty well into the summer even if the reticulation doesn’t. Acer palmatum ‘White Peaches’ is a heavily reticulated Japanese maple. ‘White Peaches’ emerges in spring with brilliant white leaves that appear to be dipped in red. While the colors do fade by the summer time, there is still quite a bit of reticulated variegation left on the leaves throughout the summer.
