Acer palmatum ‘Dixie Rain’ is one of our newest introductions at Maple Ridge Nursery. ‘Dixie Rain’ has an interesting leaf shape for a broad leaf variety. The leaves are deeply divided making it almost appear as a cross between a broad leaf and a lace leaf. The growth habit is also unusual for most broad leaf varieties. While most broad leaves grow upright, with some exceptions, ‘Dixie Rain’ appears to spread rather than grow vertical. This variety is still in its infancy stage so we are still monitoring its growth. ‘Dixie Rain’ also has rather unique colors. ‘Dixie Rain’ will first emerge in early spring with orange-red leaves that quickly change to green. This green then remains through the rest of the spring and summer. The new growth that appears is also that orange-red color which gives the tree a striking contrast. Acer shirasawanum ‘Purple Thunder’ is a full moon Japanese maple with dark purple leaves especially in the spring. These leaves fade to a burgundy in the summer. In the fall the leaves change to a bright red. ‘Purple Thunder’ has large leaves with long lobes that fold under themselves. The look is reminiscent of Acer palmatum ‘Trompenburg’ and not as extreme as Acer palmatum ‘Peve Starfish’. 'Issai nishiki momiji' is a very unique dwarf form of rough bark maple. Issai means one year or a short period. Nishiki refers to the bark So Issai nishiki means that the bark becomes rough within the first year. Momiji means maple and therefore is repetitive when listed as 'Acer palmatum Issai nishiki momiji' and as such maybe this cultivar should only be listed as 'Issai nishiki'. Either way, this little plant is sure to delight. Very rarely available in the trade because of propagation difficulties. There is some question as to its cold hardiness. Acer palmatum ‘Aocha nishiki’ is a small tree that will become almost as wide as it is tall with age. The name translates to green-yellow but 'Aocha nishiki' is mostly known for it's creamy yellow variegation, unfortunately this almost never shows up in hot climates.
