Upright Japanese Maples

Acer palmatum 'Momenshide' is a green Japanese maple with a feathery sessilifolium shape to the leaves. This is a very unusual leaf shape among Japanese maples. 'Momenshide' will grow to be about eight feet tall and six feet wide. 'Momenshide' will be green spring and summer and orange in the fall. 10 Year Size: Height: 8-10 feet   Width: 4-6 feet

Acer shirasawanum ‘Junihitoe’ is a full moon Japanese maple with large rounded leaves perfectly exemplifying the full moon category. These leaves are a very attractive light green in the spring and a darker green in the summer. Fall color is a bright, vibrant orange. Acer palmatum ‘Koshibori nishiki’ is a beautiful variegated Japanese maple with a light dusting of white and yellow variegation across the regularly green foliage. ‘Koshibori nishiki’ has very small green leaves that display the nice variegation. As with many variegated trees not every leaf will display this variegation. ‘Koshibori nishiki’ will grow into a medium size tree and should be protected from the hot afternoon sun.10 Year Size: Height: 8-10 feet Width: 4-6 feet

Acer palmatum 'Saotome' is an upright growing Japanese maple tree with broad, green leaves. 'Saotome' is a vigorous grower with a decidedly upright habit. The broad, flat leaves emerge bright green in the spring and turn a darker green in the summer. Fall color is ranged from yellow to orange. 'Saotome' will develop into an elegant small to medium upright green Japanese maple tree. 10 Year Size: Height: 12-14 feet   Width: 6-8 feet 

This small upright tree with green bark is a joy in the garden all season long.  In spring the black red foliages highlights the green veins of the leaves. Summer gives the gardener a pleasant red leaf changing to bronze and then green all the while displaying attractive scarlet samaras. Fall color is fiery red. 'Tsukushi gata' is an old cultivar, listed before 1900 in Japan. 10 Year Size:  Height 5-7 Feet Width 3-5 Feet

Acer palmatum 'Whitney Red' is a wonderful red upright Japanese maple with broad leaves. These leaves have a very nice red color in the spring that holds well into the summer. Fall leaves display a vibrant, bright red color. 'Whitney Red' is a strong growing, hardy tree that will perform well in most climates. 'Whitney Red' is a Japanese Maple that will grow into a small to medium sized tree at maturity making it perfect for just about any yard. 10 Year Size: Height: 10-12 feet   Width: 6-8 feet

'The Bishop' was selected by Henry Hoehman at Kingsville Nurseries in Maryland. Spring color is a very nice red turning first bronze and then green by mid summer. Fast growing this tree can reach up to 20 feet tall. Fall color is brilliant red. 10 Year Size:  Height 10-12 Feet Width 6-8 Feet

Acer palmatum 'Rainbow' is typically a variegated Japanese maple that offers a stunning display of vibrant hues, featuring splashes of pink variegation across full burgundy foliage. This variegation can be inconsistent, but few Japanese maples can match 'Rainbow' when its at its best. These 'Rainbow' are not currently showing variegation. That doesn't mean they won't eventually regain variegation, but they don't have any right now.  10 Year Size: Height: 8-10 feet   Width: 4-6 feet 

'Red Pygmy' may not be the best named linearilobum but it is one of the best all around Japanese Maples. Although slower growing than some of the vigorous forms of  linearilobum, 'Red Pygmy' can attain heights of more than 15 feet with age. While it comes out red in spring and may hold color into the summer in some areas, 'Red Pygmy' quickly turns green as temperatures begin to rise in hot climates. The green is a dark rich green throughout the summer then as a startling contrast this plant will turn bright yellow or gold in fall. 'Red Pygmy ' leaves have some of the narrowest lobes of the red linearilobums often having an interesting twist in the lobe. 'Red Pygmy' tolerates sun well. The changes in color and the very graceful shape make this a must have plant for collectors and occasional gardeners alike. These trees are not displaying their usual characteristics, but they are still great looking Japanese maples. In my experience reverted trees still display typical fall colors regardless of the shape of the leaves. These trees are also not guaranteed to never regain their distinguishing characteristics, but they aren't currently showing it so it has to be noted. Despite the uncharacteristic leaves these trees have been some of the most beautiful trees in the nursery all spring. Acer palmatum ‘Enkan’ has very fine linearilobum foliage and a small compact growth habit. More gardeners should find a spot for 'Enkan' in the garden. In spring foliage emerges a deep wine color and holds its red into the summer very well. Fall color ranges from orange red to deep red. Some palmate leaves appear on new growth but older foliage is quite narrow. It is very interesting the way leaves seem to hang downward from the petioles.  This variety is said to come from South Korea but has a Japanese name that means the tube. These trees are not displaying their usual characteristics, but they are still great looking Japanese maples. Acer palmatum ‘Dr. Seuss’ is a very unique Japanese maple with unusual leaves with an irregular shape. These leaves also have a unique light green on dark green variegation. At it’s peak this variegation is a creamy white on top of the darker green foliage. At other times the variegation can be quite subtle. These strange shaped leaves turn to a vibrant orange in the fall. These trees are not displaying their usual characteristics, but they are still great looking Japanese maples. In my experience reverted trees still display typical fall colors regardless of the shape of the leaves. Acer palmatum 'Red Saber' is a red Japanese Maple with deeply divided leaves and jagged edges. 'Red Saber' has bright new growth in the spring but matures to a dark red later in the year. Fall color is also a bright red. 'Red Saber' is a small to medium size upright Japanese maple with a slender shape. 10 Year Size: Height: 8-10 feet   Width: 4-5 feet

Acer palmatum 'Red Flash' is an upright Japanese maple with fantastic red color especially in the spring. The red color darkens during the summer months. The fall color of 'Red Flash' is a bright, fiery red. The picture is green due to heavy shade. 10 Year Size: Height: 8-10 feet   Width: 4-6 feet 

Acer palmatum 'Kinky Krinkle' is an unusual Japanese maple with "krinkled" leaves similar to the famous lion's head Japanese maple, 'Shishigashira'. However, 'Kinky Krinkle' does not have quite the same curl to the leaves that 'Shishigashira' has. 'Kinky Krinkle' leafs out in spring with bright green leaves. These green leaves darken in the summer. The fall color is a bright orange-red. 'Kinky Krinkle' is a fast growing tree that has much more flexible branching than the lion's head Japanese maple and is decidedly upright.  10 Year Size: Height: 10-12 feet   Width: 4-6 feet
