Upright Japanese Maples

In early spring leaves emerge red with green center in sunny locations. In more shade the leaves are green with red tint on the lobes. Either way they are totally green in a matter of days. However, the reason to grow this tree is for the wonderful bright red fall color. 'Tsukubane' is fast growing and becomes a large round topped specimen with age. Older trees regularly achieve heights of more than 25 feet. According to Yano, Acer palmatum ‘Sawa chidori’ is a Japanese introduction dating back to 1988. The foliage is green and white reticulated with red, pink or even peach highlights in early spring. 'Sawa chidori' prefers partial shade in most climates. Fall color is orange. Acer palmatum ‘Hubble’s Super Cork’ is a relatively new variety that develops rough bark at a very young age compared to similar varieties. These rough bark Japanese maples are always fascinating because it is such a stark contrast from the typical smooth bark of the vast majority of Japanese maples. ‘Hubble’s Super Cork’ leafs out in the spring with bright green leaves which darken as summer approaches. Fall color is a vibrant orange to red. These colors are even more striking when contrasting off of the brown, rough bark. ‘Hubble’s Super Cork’ is another must have variety for all rough bark fans.10 Year Size: Height: 8-10 feet Width: 4-6 feet

Acer palmatum ‘Herbstfeuer’ is a fast, upright growing Japanese maple with large, round leaves. In German, the name means Autumn fire and 'Herbstfeuer' certainly lives up to its name with its fiery red and orange colors in the fall. In spring, the large rounded leaves, held on red petioles, appear very light green with a white pubescence before turning dark green for summer. The growth habit is decidedly upright when young, becoming more rounded with age. Spring is a wonderful time for Acer palmatum ‘Satsuki Beni’ as chartreuse leaves are adorned with red highlights at the tips. ‘Satsuki beni’ is a strong grower, older plants can attain 25 feet or more. Fall color is red and fantastic most years. 10 Year size:  Height: 10-12 Feet   Width: 5-7 Feet

This vigorous tree has bright red leaves that are heavily serrated on a graceful bushy frame creating a heavily textured statement in the garden. Fall color is bright orange and wonderful. Acer palmatum ‘Azuma murasaki’ is an upright growing Japanese maple with bright red color in the spring. The deeply divided leaves of ‘Azuma murasaki’ darken to a burgundy to green color in the summer with orange undertones. Acer palmatum 'Scolopenrifolium rubrum' is a great red linearlobum type Japanese maple that is often confused with some of the other linearlobum varieties and maybe even used as a catch all name for red linearlobum plants. Our cultivar however is very distinct. The long narrow lobs are somewhat wider than plants like Red Pygmy but more narrow than 'Beni otake'. It is  definitely different than 'Atrolineare' but may be synonymous with Keiser. While the overall growth tends to be slow and bushy sometimes new limbs can grow three or 4 feet in just a few weeks. These limbs are generally unattractive and should be pruned. The spring color is a very attractive dark red holding into well summer before turning bronze. Acer palmatum ‘Asahi zuru’ is a medium sized Japanese maple with intense variegation. This tree is splashed with pinks and whites and greens. These colors are similar but more consistent than the classic ‘Oridino nishiki’. ‘Asahi zuru’ will have occasional pink striations on the bark. Like most variegated varieties, ‘Asahi zuru’ should be planted in part shade for the best color, or at least given protection from the hot afternoon sun. Height 10-12 feet Width: 6-8 feet

Acer palmatum ‘Atrolineare’ is known for its long, thin leaves giving it the nickname “ribbon leaf”. ‘Atrolineare’ emerges a nice red in the spring before darkening to a burgundy in the summer. ‘Atrolineare’ then puts on a nice display of bright red fall color. ‘Atrolineare’ is an upright growing Japanese maple, but it does not get that tall. A very vigorous large growing Australian cultivar that is more upright when young becoming more spreading with age. Spring color is bright red, holding well into summer before turning bronze or green.  As this plant always seems to be growing, the gardener will be delighted to have fresh bright red shoots practically all summer long. Acer palmatum ‘Beni musume’ is a striking dwarf Japanese maple known for its constantly changing foliage and exceptional seasonal interest. In spring, new growth emerges a beautiful pink-red that quickly softens to bronze tones, then matures to a fresh yellow-green as the season progresses. Through summer, the leaves retain a lively blush of red, pink, orange, or gold over green, giving the tree a glowing, multicolored look. In fall, ‘Beni musume’ truly shines, turning a bright golden yellow accented with red at the tips of the branches. It's truly a distinctive, eye-catching display. Acer palmatum ‘Tess’ is a green upright variety with much smaller leaves than most upright varieties. ‘Tess’ is a fast growing Japanese maple that should reach 12 feet tall at maturity. ‘Tess’ has attractive green foliage that can actually even handle a little bit of sun. Acer palmatum ‘Beni fushigi’ is a corallinum type Japanese maple with incredible coral red spring color. The foliage of ‘Beni fushigi’ then turns green for most of the summer before it catches fire in the fall. 10 Year Size: Height: 6-8 feet Width: 4-6 feet

Acer palmatum ‘Frilly Willy’ is a unique little Japanese maple with long, skinny, serrated leaves. The leaves are tightly bunched and grow close to the branches. The leaves of ‘Frilly Willy’ are green spring and summer before turning red in the fall.10 Year Size: Height: 6-8 feet Width: 2-4 feet

Acer palmatum 'Lightning' is a red Japanese maple with deeply divided leaves. The leaves of 'Lightning' are red to purple in the spring and turn to a greenish color in the summer. The leaves then turn bright yellow in the fall which is where it gets its name! 'Lightning' has a somewhat dense and shrubby habit. The leaf shape and structure of 'Lightning' give it contrast and differentiation from other red Japanese maple varieties.
