Acer palmatum ‘Sumi nagashi’ is a matsumurae type Japanese maple tree with deeply separated lobes and serrated leaves that will make a wonderful addition to any garden. Introduced in Japan in 1930, Sumi nagashi translates to village on the river bank. 'Sumi nagashi' is fast growing and will mature eloquently. Young trees grow vase shaped an upright, becoming much more rounded and full as they age. Leaves in spring will emerge sort of maroon but will be much more red than the purple color of varieties like 'Bloodgood'. As the heat of our southern summer starts to rise the foliage will first start to turn more red, then bronze before fading to green by mid-summer. Acer palmatum 'Tamukeyama' Dwarf Japanese maple has become known as one of the very best red lace leaf Japanese maples. This notoriety comes from its strong growth rate and spectacular red color throughout the year. 'Tamukeyama' is one of the fastest growing dwarf Japanese maples that we grow. 'Tamukeyama' grows slightly more irregular and upright than other lace leaf varieties.
Acer palmatum 'Tamukeyama' has been grown in Japan for over 300 years. Recently it has become accepted as one of the best lace leaf varieties in cultivation, and probably the best red lace leaf for hot climates. 'Tamukeyama' tolerates full sun in even in hotter regions.
Acer palmatum 'Tamukeyama' is a larger grower for a dwarf Japanese maple but still only gets to be about 6 feet tall at maturity. 'Tamukeyama' grows with a weeping and spreading habit eventually maturing to about 6 to 8 feet wide.
New growth is dark red in spring and holds very well especially in sunny locations. While 'Tamukeyama' holds good red color into the summer the color will fade some in hotter areas. Fall color is a mix of fiery reds with a hint of orange undertone that predictably puts on one of the falls best shows.
