Acer circinatum ‘Burgundy Jewel’ (Vine Maple) ‘Burgundy Jewel’ is a truly unique vine maple, treasured for its rich wine-colored foliage and strong seasonal interest. In early spring, the tree leafs out a deep maroon-red, displayed on large, rounded circinatum-type leaves. This saturated color holds impressively well into summer, creating a dramatic contrast to the typical green vine maple. To maintain its striking color, ‘Burgundy Jewel’ performs best with at least morning sun to full sun, though it prefers afternoon shade in hotter climates. Too much shade will cause the foliage to turn greener, while full afternoon sun may cause leaf burn. This upright vine maple grows into a dense, rounded form, reaching 6–7 feet in about 10 years. In autumn, the foliage transitions beautifully through intense oranges and bright crimsons to deep maroon reds, ensuring a brilliant fall display. ‘Burgundy Jewel’ stands apart as one of the few true red vine maples, offering color and character rarely seen in the species.  

‘Green Cascade’ is a cascading or weeping form of Acer japonicum. The leaves on mature plants can be quite large. These leaves are deeply dissected and in spring are a brilliant bright green. The overall shape of Green Cascade is quite different than most weeping Acer palmatums in that it looks more like a sprawling octopus, when young, than a tight bush. It does, however become much more dense with age. Like other japonicums it is in fall that ‘Green Cascade’ really shines. This japonicum has a very attractive delicate looking deeply dissected leaf on a sturdy upright plant, growing almost as wide as tall. 'Oregon Fern' was selected by J.D. Vertrees at Maplewood Nursery for its outstanding ruby red fall color. 10 Year Size: Height:  8-10 Feet    Width:  6-8 Feet

‘Akin’s E.P.’ is a Japanese maple built for the south. Born in Louisiana, Acer palmatum ‘Akin’s E.P.’ is an excellent grower even in our extreme summer heat. ‘Akin’s E.P.’ has small, palmate leaves that emerge a deep red or maroon in the spring. The color of these leaves fades somewhat in the summer as all maples do in the heat, however ‘Akin’s E.P.’ will hold most of its spring color given a little afternoon shade. Acer palmatum ‘Alpine Silver Thread’ is an outstanding Japanese maple with reticulated variegation. ‘Alpine Silver Thread’ has white leaves with green veins in the spring. This coloring gives the appearance that ‘Alpine Silver Thread’ is glowing in the garden. The leaves will fade to green in the summer, but it still maintains much of the reticulated variegation. Fall color ranges from yellow to orange. ‘Alpine Silver Thread’ has an upright growth habit that doesn’t get very big.

Acer palmatum ‘Anne Irene’ is a very unique variety of Japanese maple. ‘Anne Irene’ emerges in the spring with bright yellow leaves with a reddish border. These leaves are shaped different than just about any other Japanese maple. The lobes are deeply divided and each lobe is somewhat dissected but not enough to be classified as a dissectum. ‘Anne Irene’ also has a very upright habit unlike most dissectums. The red border of these strangely shaped leaves fades away by summer, but the yellow color persists all the way until fall. In the fall the leaves darken to a vibrant red. 10 Year Size: Height: 4-6 feet Width: 2-4 feet

Acer palmatum 'Ao kanzashi' is a variegated Japanese maple with very small leaves. These small leaves have a light variegation along the edges of the leaves. At times in the spring these variegated edges can be a red color, but most of the year the edges are a creamy white or light green color. Acer palmatum 'Arakawa' translates to rough bark and that perfectly describes the most outstanding feature of this interesting cultivar. It takes 3-5 years for the bark to begin to develop its texture, but once it begins to develop it soon becomes an amazing site. The bark on older plants looks alot like that of a pine tree. The leaves of the new growth emerge with a yellow tint turning green as summer arrives before turning beautiful tones of red, orange or yellow in fall. Acer palmatum ‘Asahi zuru’ is a medium sized Japanese maple with intense variegation. This tree is splashed with pinks and whites and greens. These colors are similar but more consistent than the classic ‘Oridino nishiki’. ‘Asahi zuru’ will have occasional pink striations on the bark. Like most variegated varieties, ‘Asahi zuru’ should be planted in part shade for the best color, or at least given protection from the hot afternoon sun. Height 10-12 feet Width: 6-8 feet

Acer palmatum ‘Atrolineare’ is known for its long, thin leaves giving it the nickname “ribbon leaf”. ‘Atrolineare’ emerges a nice red in the spring before darkening to a burgundy in the summer. ‘Atrolineare’ then puts on a nice display of bright red fall color. ‘Atrolineare’ is an upright growing Japanese maple, but it does not get that tall. It will have somewhat of a bushy habit as it reaches no more than 10 feet tall at maturity. 10 Year Size: Height: 8-10 feet Wdith: 4-6 feet

Acer palmatum ‘Azuma murasaki’ is an upright growing Japanese maple with bright red color in the spring. The deeply divided leaves of ‘Azuma murasaki’ darken to a burgundy to green color in the summer with orange undertones. Fall color is then a bright red color once again. 10 Year Size: Height: 10-12 feet Width: 6-8 feet

Acer palmatum ‘Bell Green’ is an excellent green Japanese maple with an upright habit. The leaves of ‘Bell Green’ actually emerge with a peachy, orange color. The color will eventually turn to green for most of the year. Fall color is an outstanding fiery orange-red. ‘Bell Green’ is a strong and fast growing tree that does well in the sun even in hotter climates. 10 Year Size: Height: 10-12 feet Width: 6-8 feet

Acer palmatum ‘Beni fushigi’ is a corallinum type Japanese maple with incredible coral red spring color. The foliage of ‘Beni fushigi’ then turns green for most of the summer before it catches fire in the fall. 10 Year Size: Height: 6-8 feet Width: 4-6 feet

Acer palmatum ‘Beni gasa’ is an upright growing Japanese maple with large, pointed leaves. These leaves come out in spring a pinkish red color. This light reddish color with turn to a burgundy, then eventually green in the summer. Fall color is then a nice mix of oranges and yellows. ‘Beni gasa’ grows with a full dense habit and can get nearly as wide as it is tall. 10 Year Size: Height: 6-8 feet Width: 6-8 feet

Acer palmatum ‘Beni hagaromo’ is an excellent example of a sessilifolium leaf shape with outstanding red color in the spring. The leaves of ‘Beni hagaromo’ appear as graceful, hanging feathers and really represent a unique look in the garden. 10 Year Size: Height: 8-10 feet Width: 4-6 feet

Acer palmatum ‘Beni musume’ is a striking dwarf Japanese maple known for its constantly changing foliage and exceptional seasonal interest. In spring, new growth emerges a beautiful pink-red that quickly softens to bronze tones, then matures to a fresh yellow-green as the season progresses. Through summer, the leaves retain a lively blush of red, pink, orange, or gold over green, giving the tree a glowing, multicolored look. In fall, ‘Beni musume’ truly shines, turning a bright golden yellow accented with red at the tips of the branches. It's truly a distinctive, eye-catching display. The medium-sized palmate leaves and naturally bushy form make it an excellent choice for small gardens, containers, or as a colorful landscape focal point. A dwarf grower, ‘Beni musume’ reaches approximately 5–7 feet in 15 years and performs best in partial shade, particularly in summer.
