Acer shirasawanum ‘Purple Thunder’ is a full moon Japanese maple with dark purple leaves especially in the spring. These leaves fade to a burgundy in the summer. In the fall the leaves change to a bright red. ‘Purple Thunder’ has large leaves with long lobes that fold under themselves. The look is reminiscent of Acer palmatum ‘Trompenburg’ and not as extreme as Acer palmatum ‘Peve Starfish’. Acer palmatum ‘Dixie Rain’ is one of our newest introductions at Maple Ridge Nursery. ‘Dixie Rain’ has an interesting leaf shape for a broad leaf variety. The leaves are deeply divided making it almost appear as a cross between a broad leaf and a lace leaf. The growth habit is also unusual for most broad leaf varieties. While most broad leaves grow upright, with some exceptions, ‘Dixie Rain’ appears to spread rather than grow vertical. This variety is still in its infancy stage so we are still monitoring its growth. ‘Dixie Rain’ also has rather unique colors. ‘Dixie Rain’ will first emerge in early spring with orange-red leaves that quickly change to green. This green then remains through the rest of the spring and summer. The new growth that appears is also that orange-red color which gives the tree a striking contrast. Acer palmatum ‘Crimson Prince’ was introduced by Princeton Nurseries in 1988. This is one of many in a long line of cultivars claiming better than 'Bloodgood' status. Being relatively fast growing 'Crimson Prince' is a very desirable red cultivar with dark purple almost black stems. The spring color is slightly more red and not as dark as 'Bloodgood' and does hold well into the summer finally turning first bronze then olive green by mid to late August in hot climates. As soon as cool nights start to show up in fall the nice dark red color quickly returns. This plant is very heavily branched and dense making it an excellent choice for a screening plant. ‘Red Select’ is a very pendulous lace leaf with foliage that emerges purple and becomes redder as it progresses through the spring. When summer arrives 'Red Select' molts from red to green before adding long branches of bright red in late summer. One of the smaller dissectums, ‘Red Select’ left unattended will become a beautiful low sprawling mound. Some growers stake this maple when young to show off its wonderful cascading habit. In my experience reverted trees still display typical fall colors regardless of the shape of the leaves. These trees are also not guaranteed to never regain their distinguishing characteristics, but they aren't currently showing it so it has to be noted.
Acer palmatum 'Hubb's Red Willow' (Reverted)

‘Hubb's Red Willow’ is a rich dark burgundy upright maple with long narrow lobes that are slightly incised, giving this small tree a willowy delicate appearance. Looks can be deceiving. This maple is as tough as they come, 'Hubb's Red Willow' is one of the more heat tolerant maples of the linearilobum group even tolerating full sun in all but the hottest climates. Very vigorous and vase shaped when young it slows down with age forming a beautiful round topped small tree. Fall color comes with an onslaught of fiery oranges and reds.

Acer palmatum 'Rainbow' is typically a variegated Japanese maple that offers a stunning display of vibrant hues, featuring splashes of pink variegation across full burgundy foliage. This variegation can be inconsistent, but few Japanese maples can match 'Rainbow' when its at its best. These 'Rainbow' are not currently showing variegation. That doesn't mean they won't eventually regain variegation, but they don't have any right now.
