Acer palmatum ‘Koto no Ito’ has been described as the dancing monkey tree for the way the extremely narrow lobes dance in the wind. The habit of 'Koto no ito' is upright and very nice. Acer palmatum 'Shishigashira' Lion's Head Japanese Maple

Acer palmatum ‘Shishigashira’ is the famous lions head maple, Shishigashira actually refers to two different old cultivars, 'Meijishi' and 'O jishi'. 'Meijishi' is the female lion and 'O jishi' is the male lion. These names come from the mythical male and female lions of Japaneses drama that dates back over 900 years. The name Shishigashira means lions head and comes from the costume worn while doing the lion dance to exorcise evil spirits. While this term can be used to describe either cultivar it is generally used to describe 'Meijishi' and the plant generally labeled 'Shishigashira' in nurseries is almost always 'Meijishi'. While both plants have crinkled tightly congested foliage arranged along stiff upright branches, 'Meijishi's foliage is a little more tightly congested and darker green than that of 'O jishi'. 'Meijishi' is also faster growing. 'O jishi' has bright red fall color while 'Meijishi' has fall color that is more orange. Either plant is excellent for containers and make wonderful patio trees.

Acer palmatum 'Ichigyoji' Green Japanese Maple

Acer palmatum ‘Ichigyoji’ is a green upright Japanese maple with large, broad leaves. ‘Ichigyoji’ is often considered the sister tree to ‘Osakazuki’ as they have many similarities including their large, broad leaves and bold, green color. ‘Ichigyoji’ also leafs out a pale orange color in the early spring similar to its sister, ‘Osakazuki’. The similarities don’t end with the leaves. The branching structures of these two trees are also similar in that ‘Ichigyoji’ shares ‘Osakazuki’s strong, stiff branches that give the tree an elegant shape that is endearing for a Japanese maple. The biggest difference in the two trees is the fall color. ‘Osakazuki’ is known for its bright reddish orange fall color that makes the tree look like it has been set ablaze. ‘Ichigyoji’ has a similarly stunning fall display, but it has a combination of yellows and oranges that create a vibrant, neon orange appearance. ‘Ichigyoji’ is a medium growing Japanese maple that should reach about 15 feet tall in 10 years.10 Year Size: Height: 14-16 feet Width: 6-8 feet

Acer palmatum ‘Herbstfeuer’ is a fast, upright growing Japanese maple with large, round leaves. In German, the name means Autumn fire and 'Herbstfeuer' certainly lives up to its name with its fiery red and orange colors in the fall. In spring, the large rounded leaves, held on red petioles, appear very light green with a white pubescence before turning dark green for summer. The growth habit is decidedly upright when young, becoming more rounded with age. Though listed as a palmatum there is some speculation that this may be a palmatum - circinatum cross.

Acer palmatum 'Chitose yama' (Ex bury) Rare Japanese Maple

Unfortunately, there are two trees grown with the name 'Chitose yama'. The original, a red clone from Japan dating back to the list of 1882 and this one, a green clone, named at Ex bury gardens in England around 1990. The name refers to the mountains near the town of Chitose on the Japanese island of Hokkaido. Since this tree has no legitimate claim to the name being second, we refer to it as Chitose yama "Ex bury form". All that aside, this is a wonderful tree. Good enough to win the Royal Horticulture Society Award of Garden Merritt in 1993. In early spring the leaves emerge a distinctive pale green with red tips covered with a white pubescence. If this weren't striking enough the entire tree is usually covered with an abundance of beautiful little red blooms. As temperatures warm and summer approaches the heavily textured leaves turn olive green complimented by the now ripe red samaras adorning the tree. As if all this were not enough, the real show starts in fall when this form of Chitose yama turns a traffic stopping bright red that literally glows. Acer palmatum ‘Alpine Silver Thread’ is an outstanding Japanese maple with reticulated variegation. ‘Alpine Silver Thread’ has white leaves with green veins in the spring. This coloring gives the appearance that ‘Alpine Silver Thread’ is glowing in the garden. The leaves will fade to green in the summer, but it still maintains much of the reticulated variegation. Fall color ranges from yellow to orange. ‘Alpine Silver Thread’ has an upright growth habit that doesn’t get very big.
