Acer palmatum 'Ukigumo' is the famous "Floating Cloud" maple. In early spring dazzling foliage opens speckled with pink and white. In summer the pink fades leaving only a dusting of white to hint at its former spring glory. Unfortunately in areas with hotter climates the variegation is not nearly as well developed and some years does not show at all. Oh the anticipation of a gardener in a hot climate hoping each spring that this will be the year that his prized "Floating Cloud" will actually show its colors. If you do actually get to see variegation in early spring in these hot locations it is fleeting at best as it will fade to green quickly leaving the gardener waiting and wanting until next spring. Compact and upright when young 'Ukigumo' matures into a beautiful small round topped tree. Fall color is generally orange.

The red is highlighted by white pubescence. The red color of the leaves quickly transitions to a yellowish orange which remains for the rest of the spring. Acer palmatum ‘First Ghost’ is another of the reticulated leaf form ghost series from Talon Buchholz. 'First Ghost' requires afternoon shade in most climates and mostly shade in hotter areas. Growing more upright when young, with age it becomes as wide or wider than tall. 'First Ghost' boasts outstanding spring color that is predominately creamy white or yellow with dark veins and red margins. Very similar to 'Sango kaku' but smaller, 'Winter Flame' can vary greatly under different growing conditions. If stressed this little guy hardly grows at all and can be a little finicky. If happy in its environment it can actually grow fairly quick although still a good bit slower than 'Sango kaku'. We find that giving it well drained soil and adequate moisture is the key to happiness for this little maple. Spring color is lime green becoming darker in summer and then yellow to orange and yellow in fall. Acer sieboldianum ‘Kumoi nishiki’ is an upright growing Japanese maple with dark green leaves with a white dust-like variegation sprinkled across all of the leaves. This variegation holds really well throughout the summer before the leaves turn various shades of orange. The dusted variegation turns purple in the fall to go with the orange foliage. ‘Kumoi nishiki’ is a very cold tolerant Japanese maple like all Acer sieboldianums. ‘Kumoi nishiki’ should be grown in mostly shade in order to maximize the variegation in the foliage. ‘Kumoi nishiki’ is a very nice alternative to ‘Ukigumo’.
