This is another of the cork bark maples highly prized by bonsai enthusiast. 'Ibo nishiki' means "warty bark", however the fissures in the bark of this small tree do not appear as deep as in some other rough bark varieties such as 'Nishi gawa' or 'Arakawa'. This gives the bark of 'Ibo nishiki' a more subtle appearance. Like many other rough bark varieties it usually takes several years for the warty bark to start to appear. 'Heffner's Red Select' is definitely better than 'Bloodgood' but as to whether or not this is the holy grail, the jury is still out. Either way this is a nice small round topped tree. Acer palmatum 'Goshiki shidare' is a very unusual, hard to find variegated lace leaf maple. The deeply dissected leaves emerge green cream and pink and remain brushed with white variegation all summer long. The growth habit is very pendulous and fall color is usually orange. Unfortunately much like 'Toyama nishiki' it tends to revert to solid green, maybe more so in hotter climates. Great care must be taken first by the propagator to make sure only the most colorful branches are grafted and then by the gardener to make sure any branches with solid green leaves are removed.
