This special little witches broom is distinguished by the cool orange and yellow color of new growth. As the new growth hardens it changes to a very appealing green. This process continues all year as this amazing little tree seems to put up brightly colored tufts of new growth through much of the summer. Fall color is yellow and orange Another neat feature of 'Hickory Hollow' is the irregular shaped leaves. Some leaves curve inward and have long serrated center lobes that appear quite rigid. While other leaves have the truncated center lobes like one would expect from a witches broom,Discovered by Mike and Ken Yeager of Hickory Hollow Landscapers in Tuxedo NY this great small plant was originally named 'Yeager'. This selection from Hefner's Nursery in Conover, NC is the latest edition to the better than 'Bloodgood' saga. Everyone is always looking for a 'Bloodgood' type tree that will tolerate sun and heat in hotter climates and stay red all summer long. 'Heffner's Red Select' is definitely better than 'Bloodgood' but as to whether or not this is the holy grail, the jury is still out. Either way this is a nice small round topped tree. Emerging bright red in spring, the foliage quickly turns a very dark burgundy. The dark color should hold well through summer in all but the hottest climates. Acer palmatum 'Green Tea' is a fantastic Japanese maple with excellent color throughout the year. 'Grean Tea' first emerges in the spring with peach colored leaves with orange edges. These leaves eventually mature into an olive green color that persists through the majority of the summer. In late summer, 'Green Tea' will often push red new growth that will repeat the spring color cycle. In the fall, the leaves of 'Green Tea' turn a bright red. Acer palmatum 'Goshiki shidare' is a very unusual, hard to find variegated lace leaf maple. The deeply dissected leaves emerge green cream and pink and remain brushed with white variegation all summer long. The growth habit is very pendulous and fall color is usually orange. Unfortunately much like 'Toyama nishiki' it tends to revert to solid green, maybe more so in hotter climates. Great care must be taken first by the propagator to make sure only the most colorful branches are grafted and then by the gardener to make sure any branches with solid green leaves are removed.

Acer palmatum ‘Fukinagashi’ is a delicate little linearlobum that may be the most unique Japanese maple in the category. The leaves of ‘Fukinagashi’ emerge in spring dark burgundy, almost black. ‘Fukinagashi’ also has some of the smallest and finest leaves of any linearlobum, which makes it a very interesting tree in the spring. However, unlike most Japanese maples, ‘Fukinagashi’ may be as interesting in the summer as it is in spring. By summertime, the leaves of ‘Fukinagashi’ turns a bright green. The bark of ‘Fukinagashi’ is also a dark almost black color. This contrasts excellently off the bright green leaves, making the leaves appear even brighter.
