Acer palmatum ‘Oki kasane’ is a member of the Corallinum group of Japanese maples. All of these Corallinum type Japanese maples leaf out very early in the spring, and when they do, ‘Oki kasane’ has beautiful peachy orange foliage. This incredible color typically holds through April. The colors then transition to orange and then eventually green by the end of May. Much like other Corallinum type Japanese maples and maybe more than the others, ‘Oki kasane’ will usually push new growth in the summer which resembles the bright orange-red foliage of spring. This new growth on top of the olive green foliage is extremely attractive. Fall color is then orange to red.

Acer palmatum 'Tsukubane' Green Japanese Maple

In early spring leaves emerge red with green center in sunny locations. In more shade the leaves are green with red tint on the lobes. Either way they are totally green in a matter of days. However, the reason to grow this tree is for the wonderful bright red fall color. 'Tsukubane' is fast growing and becomes a large round topped specimen with age. Older trees regularly achieve heights of more than 25 feet. The Japanese name means ridge on Mount Tsukuba.

Acer palmatum 'Chitose yama' (Ex bury) Rare Japanese Maple

Unfortunately, there are two trees grown with the name 'Chitose yama'. The original, a red clone from Japan dating back to the list of 1882 and this one, a green clone, named at Ex bury gardens in England around 1990. The name refers to the mountains near the town of Chitose on the Japanese island of Hokkaido. Since this tree has no legitimate claim to the name being second, we refer to it as Chitose yama "Ex bury form". All that aside, this is a wonderful tree. Good enough to win the Royal Horticulture Society Award of Garden Merritt in 1993. In early spring the leaves emerge a distinctive pale green with red tips covered with a white pubescence. If this weren't striking enough the entire tree is usually covered with an abundance of beautiful little red blooms. As temperatures warm and summer approaches the heavily textured leaves turn olive green complimented by the now ripe red samaras adorning the tree. As if all this were not enough, the real show starts in fall when this form of Chitose yama turns a traffic stopping bright red that literally glows. Born in Louisiana, Acer palmatum ‘Akin’s E.P.’ is an excellent grower even in our extreme summer heat. ‘Akin’s E.P.’ has small, palmate leaves that emerge a deep red or maroon in the spring. The color of these leaves fades somewhat in the summer as all maples do in the heat, however ‘Akin’s E.P.’ will hold most of its spring color given a little afternoon shade. Acer palmatum ‘Nebula’ is another in a long line of excellent, reticulated Japanese maples introduced by Buchholz nursery. The leaves of Nebula emerge a light pink with peach and cream variegation.
