Grafted Trees

The large leaves on ‘Vitifolium’ are what give it its name as they resemble the leaves of a grape vine. These large leaves emerge green with a bronze hue before maturing to a darker green in late spring and into the summer. This tree also has more prominent flowers in the spring than most Japanese Maples. These small red flowers really stand out on the light green spring foliage. However, the fall is when ‘Vitifolium’ really shows out with a display of yellows and oranges and reds all over the tree. ‘Vitifolium’ is a strong and fast grower that will reach 10-15 feet tall in about 10 years. The sturdy branching and round topped form give this tree a wonderful look for the garden. Pinus parviflora ‘Gimborn’s Pyramid’ is a slow growing, upright selection of Japanese white pine. ‘Gimborn’s pyramid’ grows clusters of short blue-green needles. The overall form of ‘Gimborn’s Pyramid’ is a dense, upright tree with a pyramid shape. 10 Year Size: Height: 6-8 feet Width: 4-6 feet

Information abounds about the "Jade Dragon", most of it conflicting.This plant is often seen as 'Gyo kuryu' or 'Gyoku ryu' both incorrect. Gyoku means jade in Japanese and Ryu means dragon but there are no spaces between words so 'Gyokuryu' would be correct.Information about mature size and shape of 'Gyokuryu' also conflicts greatly. 'Gyokuryu' has a nesting habit when young and attains height very slowly growing only 2-3 inches per year. Eventually vertical shoots with elongated internodal length appear from the top of the plant that grow much faster, 12-18 inches per year. If left unchecked this plant can reach 15 to 20 feet quite easily. However, if the gardener wishes to keep the plant small, pruning the vertical shoots from the top of 'Gyokuryu' once or twice a year is all that is necessary to maintain a small beautiful rounded plant.Taking cuttings from the lateral branches produces a slow growing plant that will stay smaller about 3 to 4 feet in ten years or until the vertical growth appears. Growers taking their cuttings off the top vertical shoots produce plants that skip the nesting stage and grow straight up with much larger internodal separation. These plants can grow 10 feet or more in ten years creating a plant more like the species that can be used for screening. Either way the dark foliage is beautiful.'Gyokuryu' does not bronze in winter in most climates and grows wonderfully in full sun or heavy shade.10 year size:   Height: 4-10 Feet   Width: 4-6 Feet

Pinus strobus ‘Angel Falls’ is an Eastern white pine with a very pendulous habit. ‘Angel Falls’ will often develop a central leader that gives it some height, but most of its growth will have a weeping characteristic. ‘Angel Falls’ has long blueish green needles that are quite attractive especially as the plant matures and grows more dense. ‘Angel Falls’ grows roughly a foot per year and ultimate height will depend greatly on the gardener’s training of the tree and the development of a central leader. 10 Year Size: Height: 6-8 feet Width: 4-6 feet

With one of the most dissected leaves you will ever see on a Japanese maple 'Red Filigree Lace' has been a highly sought after "collectors plant" for many years. Originally propagated from a chance seedling by Will Curtis in Sherwood, Oregon, this plant will become an eye-catching topic of conversation in any garden.  Very pendulous the habit is mounding and very low unless staked or grafted on a standard. 'Red Filigree Lace' probably holds it' red color in summer in the Southeastern U.S. better than any red cultivar of Japanese maple. It does however require some shade. Amazingly it will hold its color even in somewhat shady conditions. Given perfect growing conditions it is not only a reliable plant but in some instances becomes quite vigorous. Unfortunately in hot climates it is very slow growing and is susceptible to over watering when young. In very early spring the delicate looking foliage is decidedly red becoming darker purple in summer before turning crimson in fall. Do not let the intricate finely cut lacy leaf fool you, as long as you provide a well-drained environment 'Red Filigree Lace' is a very sturdy and hardy plant that any gardener should feel lucky to have. Acer palmatum 'Aekan's Ie's' is a linearlobum style Japanese maple with dark leaves that turn bright red in the fall. At maturity, 'Aekan's Ie's' should get between 6-8 feet tall and feature a small tree shape. 

Thuja occidentalis 'Sunkist' is a fast growing arborvitae with excellent golden yellow color. Few conifers can match the golden yellow color of 'Sunkist'. 'Sunkist' will grow into a large, broad conifer at maturity with a dense and thick structure. This makes 'Sunkist' an excellent border or privacy plant with excellent color. 10 Year Size: Height: 8-10 feet   Width: 4-6 feet

Picea orientalis 'Tom Thumb' is a very small growing oriental spruce with golden yellow color. 'Tom Thumb' will grow into a short, rounded shrub at maturity. 'Tom Thumb' has bright gold newer foliage that extends from the lighter green branches. Pinus parviflora 'Ogon' is a variegated Japanese White Pine that is sure to brighten up your garden. 'Ogon' has short, blue green needles with golden variegation throughout. 'Ogon' has a short pyramidal shape that should fit in most landscapes.  10 Year Size: Height: 4-6 feet   Width: 2-4 feet

Pinus strobus 'Elf' is a dwarf Eastern White Pine that only grows to be about 6 feet tall with a dense compact habit. The needles on 'Elf' are much shorter than the typical needles of Pinus strobus.  10 Year Size: Height: 4-6 feet   Width: 2-4 feet
