Acer palmatum ‘Rock Star’ was discovered as a chance seedling from Acer palmatum ‘Ornatum’ by Frank Brannon in Atlanta, GA and has been cultivated here at Maple Ridge Nursery. ‘Rock Star’ emerges with stunningly bright red leaves in early spring which darken to a dark maroon color later in spring. The leaves fade to a green in summer before turning to a vibrant array of reds, yellows, and oranges in the fall. ‘Rock Star’ is a strong grower here in the south, but should still be shielded from the hot afternoon sun. 10 Year Size: Height: 4-6 feet Width: 4-6 feet

The Unique Acer palmatum 'Ryusei' is a Weeping Dwarf Japanese Maple with Small, Broad Leaves with Bright Green Color
Acer palmatum ‘Ryusei’ is a weeping dwarf Japanese maple with the most pendulous Japanese maple on the market today. 'Ryusei' basically grows straight down with a dramatic weeping growth habit. With this extreme growth habit 'Ryusei' won't achieve much height at all without staking. The natural growth of 'Ryusei' will create a mounding ground cover on its own. When grown in a container it can resemble ivy cascading down past the bottom of the pot. For the landscape 'Ryu sei' is generally staked up to a certain height then allowed to fall to the ground making a beautiful flowing waterfall like affect.
The most unusual thing about 'Ryusei' is that it has this extreme weeping growth habit but is the leaves are fully palmate instead of the traditionally lacy leaves of most weeping Japanese maples. The leaves of 'Ryusei' are light green and very attractively star shaped. Most cascading varieties have dissected leaves which makes 'Ryusei' one of the most unique varieties of weeping dwarf Japanese maples there is. The green leaf color is bright green in the spring and darkens somewhat in the summer. These leaves are stunning in the fall as they turn a bright orange that appears to glow in the landscape.
Acer palmatum 'Ryusei' is a fantastic growing dwarf Japanese maple that will grow in sun or shade in basically all climates. 'Ryusei' should grow perfectly well in zones 5 through 9. 'Ryusei' can be grown in full sun even in hotter climates. 'Ryusei' is a very fast grower and can be trained to achieve many different interesting shapes.

Acer palmatum ‘Peve Multicolor’ is a tremendous variegated variety of Japanese maple with white dusting across the foliage. Unfortunately, this variegation is inconsistent and does not appear every year. Without the variegation, ‘Peve Multicolor’ has light green leaves and an attractive form. This seems to be the more common look for us. Fall color is going to be a brilliant yellow to orange regardless of the variegation.

Acer palmatum ‘Osakazuki’ was listed in catalogs in Japan since the mid 1800s this upright green Japanese Maple is mostly known for its bright red fall color. That is not the only feature that makes this great tree worth growing, red samaras hang from it's graceful branches during the summer forming a nice contrast with the green heavily textured leaves. The sturdy foliage helps 'Osakazuki tolerate full sun even in hotter climates. The cup like shape formed at the base of the leaf led the Japanese to refer to this tree as "Saki-cup-like leaf" or 'Osakazuki'. Fall color is a stunning bright red, Southern Living magazine even went as far as publishing an article a few years back stating that ‘Osakazuki’ had the best fall color of any maple. Acer palmatum ‘Otome zakura’ is a member of the Corallinum group of Japanese maples and is one of our favorites. All of these Corallinum type Japanese maples leaf out very early in the spring, and when they do, ‘Otome zakura’ has some of the brightest red foliage you can imagine. This incredible red color typically holds through April. The colors then transition to orange and then eventually green by the end of May. Much like other Corallinum type Japanese maples and maybe more than the others, ‘Otome zakura’ will usually push new growth in the summer which resembles the bright red foliage of spring. This red new growth on top of the olive green foliage is extremely attractive. When young, Acer palmatum 'Omure yama' may develop a leader and grow up, but as the tree reaches maturity the long slender new growth cascades down, giving the tree the weeping look that it is known for. Some growers stake 'Omure yama' when young to help it attain initial height from which to weep from. Plants that never develop a leader become wide weeping mounds not much different than the growth habit of many dissectums. I have heard other authors claim that this or that variety has the best fall color of any Japanese maple. Acer palmatum ‘O jishi’ is one of the famous lions head maples. 'O jishi' is the male lion and 'Meijishi' is the female lion. Shishigashira means lions head, and while this term can be used to describe either cultivar it is generally used to describe 'Meijishi'. The leaves of 'Ojishi' are heavily crinkled but lighter in color and not quite as tightly crinkled as 'Meijishi'. 'O jishi' is also a much slower growing smaller tree. In full sun new growth has a red tinge to the tips of the foliage. Fall color is red and glorious. The leaves appear very crowded on the stem giving the tree a compact and congested look, with the short internodal length making it hard to propagate and contributing to the fact that it is rarely seen in nurseries. Acer palmatum ‘Nebula’ is another in a long line of excellent, reticulated Japanese maples introduced by Buchholz nursery. The leaves of Nebula emerge a light pink with peach and cream variegation.
