Acer palmatum ‘Dragon Tears’ is a semi-pendulous tree that grows more out rather than up or down. ‘Dragon Tears’ will get some height, but its growth habit will result in a tree that is at least as wide as it is tall. ‘Dragon Tears’ has small, deeply divided, broad leaves. These leaves have a nice, deep burgundy color in the spring. The leaves will fade somewhat in the summer, but should always maintain at least a hint of burgundy. The the fall, ‘Dragon Tears’ displays a nice orange-red fall color that will put on a show.

Acer palmatum ‘First Ghost’ is another of the reticulated leaf form ghost series from Talon Buchholz. 'First Ghost' requires afternoon shade in most climates and mostly shade in hotter areas. Growing more upright when young, with age it becomes as wide or wider than tall. 'First Ghost' boasts outstanding spring color that is predominately creamy white or yellow with dark veins and red margins. The variegation on 'First Ghost' holds longer into the summer than any reticulated cultivar we grow. Fall color is bright orange to red.

Acer palmatum ‘Gable’s Glory’ is a fascinating Japanese maple with some incredible color changes. ‘Gable’s Glory’ first emerges in the spring with bright red, broad leaves. This is a stunning color that persists through the spring. As the temperatures rise, ‘Gable’s Glory’ changes to a bronze-red color. The color of the leaves continues to get lighter until they are nearly yellow in the peak of summer. What is even more impressive than the bright summer color, is the new growth that this tree puts on late in the summer months. ‘Gable’s Glory’ will push out more of that bright red spring growth that appears on top of the yellow summer color. Acer palmatum ‘Koto no Ito’ has been described as the dancing monkey tree for the way the extremely narrow lobes dance in the wind. The habit of 'Koto no ito' is upright and very nice. It's vary narrow strap like leaves inspired Koichiro Wada of Japan to name it 'Koto no ito' which means harp strings. Fall color begins as a wonderful yellow moving towards gold and finishing blended with orange.

Acer palmatum 'Manyo no sato' Variegated Japanese Maple

Acer palmatum ‘Manyo no sato’ is a wonderfully funky maple with the Japanese name that means "village of 10,000 leaves". ‘Manyo no sato’ is very similar to 'Beni shien'. In early spring the irregularly shaped leaves emerge cream and purple. Leaves become more purple and green with cream before the purple starts to fade in summer. While fairly sun tolerant this cultivar prefers some shade in hotter climates. In more sun the red colors become more prominent while in more shade the variegation becomes much more subtle. Fall color is red to orange and very pleasing.

Acer palmatum 'Red Feathers' Dwarf Japanese Maple (Pre-Order)

This little maple with very fine dissected leaves is an excellent addition to any garden. Among dissectums only 'Red filigree Lace' and 'Beni komo no su' have finer foliage. 'Red Feathers' does seem to grow faster than it's fine leafed cousins. Starting very bright red in spring the foliage darkens with the heat of summer turning green in hot climates before putting on a wonderful crimson show in fall. Discovered in 1980 and introduced in 1995 by John Vermeullen and Sons nursery this plant was actually a seedling off of the original 'Burgundy Lace' (also a John Vermeullen and Sons introduction in 1945). During evaluation this plant was labeled Rilas Red and occasionally this plant will show up with this incorrect name, leading one to believe that some plants escaped the nursery before introduction.
