With one of the most dissected leaves you will ever see on a Japanese maple 'Red Filigree Lace' has been a highly sought after "collectors plant" for many years. Originally propagated from a chance seedling by Will Curtis in Sherwood, Oregon, this plant will become an eye-catching topic of conversation in any garden. Very pendulous the habit is mounding and very low unless staked or grafted on a standard. 'Red Filigree Lace' probably holds it' red color in summer in the Southeastern U.S. better than any red cultivar of Japanese maple. It does however require some shade. Amazingly it will hold its color even in somewhat shady conditions. Given perfect growing conditions it is not only a reliable plant but in some instances becomes quite vigorous. Unfortunately in hot climates it is very slow growing and is susceptible to over watering when young. In very early spring the delicate looking foliage is decidedly red becoming darker purple in summer before turning crimson in fall. Do not let the intricate finely cut lacy leaf fool you, as long as you provide a well-drained environment 'Red Filigree Lace' is a very sturdy and hardy plant that any gardener should feel lucky to have.

Acer palmatum ‘Lemon Chiffon’ emerges in spring with a much brighter yellow color to the leaves than just about any other lace leaf variety. The leaves darken a little bit in the summer to a chartreuse green which really stands out among the muted greens more typically found in the summer. Fall color is a bright yellow to orange. ‘Lemon Chiffon’ has a low spreading habit and should never get as tall as it is wide.

'Issai nishiki momiji' is a very unique dwarf form of rough bark maple. Issai means one year or a short period. Nishiki refers to the bark So Issai nishiki means that the bark becomes rough within the first year. Momiji means maple and therefore is repetitive when listed as 'Acer palmatum Issai nishiki momiji' and as such maybe this cultivar should only be listed as 'Issai nishiki'. Acer palmatum ‘O jishi’ is one of the famous lions head maples. 'O jishi' is the male lion and 'Meijishi' is the female lion. Shishigashira means lions head, and while this term can be used to describe either cultivar it is generally used to describe 'Meijishi'. The leaves of 'Ojishi' are heavily crinkled but lighter in color and not quite as tightly crinkled as 'Meijishi'. 'O jishi' is also a much slower growing smaller tree. In full sun new growth has a red tinge to the tips of the foliage. Fall color is red and glorious. The leaves appear very crowded on the stem giving the tree a compact and congested look, with the short internodal length making it hard to propagate and contributing to the fact that it is rarely seen in nurseries. Acer palmatum ‘Enkan’ has very fine linearilobum foliage and a small compact growth habit. More gardeners should find a spot for 'Enkan' in the garden. In spring foliage emerges a deep wine color and holds its red into the summer very well. Fall color ranges from orange red to deep red. Some palmate leaves appear on new growth but older foliage is quite narrow. It is very interesting the way leaves seem to hang downward from the petioles. This variety is said to come from South Korea but has a Japanese name that means the tube.
These trees are not displaying their usual characteristics, but they are still great looking Japanese maples. In my experience reverted trees still display typical fall colors regardless of the shape of the leaves. These trees are also not guaranteed to never regain their distinguishing characteristics, but they aren't currently showing it so it has to be noted.
