Acer palmatum 'Ruslyn in the Pink' is a Wonderful Dwarf Japanese Maple with Large Pinkish-Red Leaves Acer palmatum 'Ruslyn in the Pink' has rather large leaves for a dwarf. The foliage first appears pink or orange pink in early spring depending on the amount of sunlight it receives. The foliage begins to darken to red and then purple within a few weeks. As summer takes over from spring older growth eventually fades from purple to bronze and eventually olive green. Any late summer growth comes out with the pink color from early spring. The fall color crimson and is very dramatic for a small tree. 'Ruslyn in the Pink' was discovered by Vern Palmeter at Ruslyn Nursery in New Platz, New York. 'Ruslyn in the Pink' is a unique dwarf Japanese maple tree with an upright growth habit and a uniform branching structure. 'Ruslyn in the Pink' is dense and compact but still open enough to have a standard tree appearance. 'Ruslyn in the Pink' will only grow to about 5 or 6 feet tall and only a few feet wide. 'Ruslyn in the Pink' will grow at a moderately fast growth rate for a dwarf Japanese maple. 'Ruslyn in the Pink' is a very hardy dwarf Japanese maple that can be grown all over the United States. Acer palmatum ‘Kurenai Jishi’ is often referred to as the red lion’s head maple. ‘Kurenai jishi’ leafs out bright red in the spring with some of the most unique foliage you will ever see on a Japanese maple. The leaves are curled up, crinkled, and close to the branch similar to ‘Shishigashira’. The foliage on ‘Kurenai jishi’ turns from bright red to burgundy to green from spring to summer. Acer palmatum 'Waterfall' Dwarf Japanese Maple with Green Lace Leaves and the Weeping "Waterfall" Shape Acer palmatum ‘Waterfall’ is a stunning weeping dwarf Japanese maple with green lacy leaves. 'Waterfall' is quite similar to Acer palmatum 'Viridis', however the leaf shape can be slightly different as well as different variations of yellow and orange fall color. Acer palmatum 'Waterfall' emerges in spring with bright lime green color that darkens as the temperatures get warmer in the summer. 'Waterfall' displays an excellent green color through the spring and summer that will really brighten up a landscape. It can even tolerate full sun in hotter climates but would certainly appreciate a break from the hot afternoon sun if possible. We see very little difference in shape or leaf size at our nursery, although it may be slightly slower growing. Where we do see a huge difference is in the fall color which in addition to the bright yellow and gold of 'Viridis', 'Waterfall' displays wonderful reds and oranges washed across the leaves. Acer palmatum 'Garnet' will Provide Great Red Color for a Weeping Dwarf Japanese Maple in Full Sun Acer palmatum ‘Garnet’ is a great weeping dwarf Japanese maple for red color. ‘Garnet’ emerges a light red color in spring which deepens and holds through most of the summer. The leaves on this beautifully shaped tree then brighten to a bright garnet red color in fall. 'Garnet' is one of our favorite red lace leaf varieties for warmer climates. 'Garnet' is a weeping dwarf Japanese maple that can handle full sun even in these warmer areas. Acer palmatum 'Garnet' does a great job of holding its red color in full sun despite warmer temperatures. 'Garnet' doesn't just grow well in warm climates though as it will grow very well in zones 5 through 10. ‘Garnet’ matures into a wonderful mound shape that is as wide as it is tall. Acer palmatum ‘Shishio hime’ is a very nice, small Japanese maple that will grow much wider than tall, forming a low mound with age. 'Shishio hime' emerges in spring with Red tips to the leaves before turning green for the summer. The leaves become smaller each year as the plant matures. Older specimens have some of the smallest leaves of any Acer palmatum. The foliage is also extremely dense. Acer palmatum ‘Anne Irene’ is a very unique variety of Japanese maple. ‘Anne Irene’ emerges in the spring with bright yellow leaves with a reddish border. These leaves are shaped different than just about any other Japanese maple. The lobes are deeply divided and each lobe is somewhat dissected but not enough to be classified as a dissectum. ‘Anne Irene’ also has a very upright habit unlike most dissectums. The red border of these strangely shaped leaves fades away by summer, but the yellow color persists all the way until fall. Acer palmatum ‘Jerre Schwartz’ was introduced by Billy Schwartz, owner of Green Mansions Nursery in Pennsylvania. He named the unique cultivar for his mother Jerre. Acer palmatum ‘Jerre Schwartz’ has interestingly sharp toothed and deeply divided small leaves emerge cherry red in early spring before quickly becoming darker and more maroon and then bronze before turning totally green for summer. New cheery colored growth in summer provides a cool contrast to the older green foliage. Found as a witches broom the center lobes of some leaves will show the characteristic shortened middle lobe. Acer palmatum ‘Miss Piggy’ is One of the Most Unusual Dwarf Japanese Maples that we Grow at Maple Ridge Nursery Acer palmatum ‘Miss Piggy’ is a dwarf tree with sturdy branching and bunched up leaves that are caused by fasciations at the tips of the branches. This means that the branches have actually fused together. These fasciations are more commonly seen in conifers and are extremely rare in Japanese maples. The leaves can sometimes grow so close together that they completely encircle the branches. When this occurs, you can look straight down the branch and see a perfect ring of leaves that almost make it look like an eye. 'Miss Piggy' doesn't get very big, maturing to only about 5 or 6 feet tall, but it is a fast grower especially for a dwarf Japanese maple. ‘Miss Piggy’ has small palmate leaves that are light green in the spring and darken just a bit in the summer. In the fall the leaves turn an attractive orange and red. 'Miss Piggy' can handle a good bit of sun in all but the hottest climates where it would need at least some shade in the afternoon. The small green leaves of 'Miss Piggy' will be a lighter green if it is grown in more sunlight or a darker green if it is grown in more shade. Acer palmatum ‘Hime Shojo’ is an awesome little Japanese maple discovered in Japan before 1994 that is a really exciting addition to the U.S. market. While the new growth is a very bright almost cherry red the small deeply divided leaves soon harden off to the classic dark maroon that the Japanese refer to as shojo. This continues much of the summer, although a relatively small plant, 'Hime shojo' seems to put on bright red new growth much of the year. This dense little shrubby tree holds its color very well long into the summer and even all summer long in cooler parts of its range. Although the best colors are achieved in full sun, and it will tolerate full sun in most areas, a little shade at some part of the day is appreciated in hotter climates. Fall color is a bright cherry red and better than many small cultivars. Acer palmatum 'Mikawa kaen' is the Golden Mikawa Dwarf Japanese Maple Acer palmatum 'Mikawa kaen' is a dwarf Japanese maple that is a relative to the ever popular 'Mikawa yatsubusa'. 'Mikawa kaen' is slow growing with closely arranged leaves that create a wonderful stubby upright tree. The defining characteristic of 'Mikawa kaen' is the short inter nodal lengths and closely growing buds that create a stacked shingle like appearance of the leaves. 'Mikawa kaen' stays a little bit smaller than 'Mikawa yatsubusa' 'Mikawa kaen' has broad leaves that lay flat and close together. While the leaf shape and structure is quite similar to 'Mikawa yatsubusa', 'Mikawa kaen' has some differences in leaf color. The leaf color of this interested dwarf Japanese maple tree is gold to bronze in the spring. The leaves then change to green for most of the summer. 'Mikawa kaen' has incredible fall color ranging from orange to red. While it may be slow growing, 'Mikawa kaen' is still a hardy tree and can be grown in many different climates across the country. 'Mikawa kaen' can be comfortably grown in zones 5 through 9. 'Mikawa kaen' can be grown in full sun in some climates, but will prefer some afternoon shade in the hotter locations. In spring, ‘Baldsmith’ has leaves that emerge much more of a deep red than the burgundy color of most "red" Japanese Maples. Soon after, most of the leaf turns green leaving just the margins a very attractive red. The red and green of the bi color leaf at this stage makes the overall tree appear almost orange and gives it a very distinctive appearance. In some climates this look lasts well into the summer but in hotter climates where some afternoon shade would be greatly appreciated, 'Baldsmith' fades to green as summer takes hold. ‘Chantilly Lace’ was found at Red Maple Nursery in 1949 and introduced by Billy Shwartz. This great Japanese maple with the Rock and Roll name has very finely cut leaves.  New growth appears red but very quickly changes to green from the center of the leaf out. This effect gives the plant almost a variegated appearance. By summer the foliage is light green almost chartreuse and contrasts greatly with other green maples that start yellow-green only to darken as summer approaches. Fall color is bright raspberry red. Acer palmatum 'Sister Ghost' emerges yellow with dark veins in early spring. Sometimes in early spring leaves have a slight pink cast. By summer foliage is mostly green with a few specks of yellow to let you know this plant was variegated. Fall color is orange with hints of yellow and red. Generally growing wider than tall this small tree does best in partial shade in all but the coolest areas. Acer palmatum ‘Sekka yatsubusa’ has short internodal lengths that give this small plant a very different appearance as the leaves are bunched up along the stems. Red edges to the deeply divided leaves and red petioles add to the effect. All though very slow when young this small tree can grow quite vigorously under the right conditions. Once the tree gets a little older it begins to develop very interesting fasciations or flattened stems of congested growth. While like most maples 'Sekka yatsubusa' is happy in partial shade this adaptable cultivar does quite well in heavy shade or in full sun in all but the hottest climates. Acer palmatum ‘Dr. Brown’ is a gorgeous tree with a name that doesn’t do it justice. ‘Dr. Brown’ leafs out with peach, pink, maroon, and green tones to the delicate foliage that give this tree outstanding spring color. This cultivar out of Australia has an interesting reddish color in early spring becoming more bronze as summer approaches. Reportedly this bronze color persists most of the summer but in hotter climates the bronze fades to mostly green with a hint of the former color remaining on the leaf edges.
