This tree stays red all the time. ‘Monticello Gardens’ is red in the spring, it is red in the summer and then it is, of course, red in the fall. 'Murasaki kiyohime' is a small maple that will grow much wider than tall, Like it's close relative 'Kiyo hime' this cultivar emerges in spring with red tips to the leaves before turning green for the summer. there are very slight differences between the 2 maples. We find that the edge of 'Murasaki kiyohime' to be more maroon red and 'Kiyo hime' to be more orange red but the tint of these colors can be affected by the sun making them hard to distinguish. Fall color ranges from bronze to orange. 'Murasaki kiyohime' is also slightly more upright when young, often sending up vertical shoots of a foot or more on very young plants only to spend the rest of it's life thickening up and growing wider. Acer palmatum ‘O jishi’ is one of the famous lions head maples. 'O jishi' is the male lion and 'Meijishi' is the female lion. Shishigashira means lions head, and while this term can be used to describe either cultivar it is generally used to describe 'Meijishi'. The leaves of 'Ojishi' are heavily crinkled but lighter in color and not quite as tightly crinkled as 'Meijishi'. 'O jishi' is also a much slower growing smaller tree. In full sun new growth has a red tinge to the tips of the foliage. Fall color is red and glorious. The leaves appear very crowded on the stem giving the tree a compact and congested look, with the short internodal length making it hard to propagate and contributing to the fact that it is rarely seen in nurseries. Acer palmatum 'Orangeola' is one of the fastest growing weeping dwarf Japanese maple varieties there is, but it still does not attain height very quickly. 'Orangeola' has a very pendulous habit and will have quite the waterfall look as it grows. 'Orangeola' can be a fast growing weeping Japanese maple especially when young which can create long shoots of weeping branches. This growth eventually helps 'Orangeola' develop into a low mounding Japanese maple that is a great for corners and centerpieces.
Acer palmatum 'Orangeola' is a great weeping dwarf Japanese maple that changes personality all season long. It emerges in the spring with heavily dissected leaves that have tones of green and orange in early spring and as the sun works it's magic on the foliage it quickly turns brick red. This red color holds into the early summer. As spring turns into summer the older leaves start to slowly turn green, this process happens over a number of weeks during which the leaves appear molted with infused colors of green and purple washed across each leaf. About the time the entire plant becomes green in mid to late summer 'Orangeola' decides it is time to grow again, putting out red new growth that lays over the older foliage. Then in fall it really puts on a show with traffic stopping bright orange-red leaves.
'Orangeola' does extremely well in hotter climates and can be grown in sun or shade. More red colors will be attained in sunnier locations, but 'Orangeola' will grow well in shade as well. 'Orangeola' will grow well in zones 5 through 9 and will have different effects in different climates.

Acer palmatum 'Red Dragon' is a Weeping Dwarf Japanese Maple with Brilliant Red Color
Acer palmatum 'Red Dragon' is a dwarf Japanese maple that is extremely popular for its brilliant red color. 'Red Dragon' will stay more red during summer than most varieties. The coarse leaves begin the spring dark red and become more red as temperatures increase. As summer temperatures reach their peak and most other red varieties have turned green 'Red Dragon' still has a good bit of red left on it's leaves. Fall color is a dramatic crimson red.
The growth habit of 'Red Dragon' is not as pendulous as other weeping cultivars, at times it grows almost prostrate. 'Red Dragon' also stays a little smaller than other dwarf Japanese maples. 'Red Dragon' will max out around 6 feet tall but will only get 4 feet tall in many instances. 'Red Dragon' will get about as wide if not wider than it is tall growing to roughly 6 feet wide.
While 'Red Dragon' will tolerate full sun in some climates, it would prefer a break from the sun at some point during the day in hotter areas. Although 'Red Dragon is reported to be a moderate grower in some climates, we find it to be slower than average in the south. 'Red Dragon' will grow well in zones 5 through 9.
