Acer palmatum ‘Baby Ghost’ is the smallest of the “Ghost” series of reticulated Japanese maples. ‘Baby Ghost’ first leafs out with an amber color leaf that transitions to red. Leaves then fade to burgundy and ultimately to green which maintains throughout the summer. Introduced by Billy Schwartz of Green Mansions Nursery, 'Baby Lace' was the first witches broom discovered on a dissectum. The leaves are small, intricate and just about as finely dissected as 'Red Filigree Lace' only much more irregular. In spring the color is astounding, with pink, red and green all mixed together but as the new growth hardens off the color quickly becomes a solid light green. Fall color is a nice mix of yellows, oranges and reds. In spring, ‘Baldsmith’ has leaves that emerge much more of a deep red than the burgundy color of most "red" Japanese Maples. Soon after, most of the leaf turns green leaving just the margins a very attractive red. The red and green of the bi color leaf at this stage makes the overall tree appear almost orange and gives it a very distinctive appearance. In some climates this look lasts well into the summer but in hotter climates where some afternoon shade would be greatly appreciated, 'Baldsmith' fades to green as summer takes hold. 'Beni hime' is a great, very small maple that comes out a bright red in spring. After the first big push on new grafts, which can be 4 to 6 inches long, 'Beni hime' becomes one of the slowest growing maples with annual growth rarely exceeding 1-2 inches. As the weather gets hotter in summer the older leaves turn dark green while the ever present new growth on the tips tends to stay bright red, although it seems quite ironic that a tree that stays so small should always have new growth. Beni hime is one of the best small plants for the landscape but always seems to be in short supply due to the fact that it can be difficult to propagate. An upright vase shaped form of coral bark maple. The bark is usually more red in winter compared to the salmon color of it's more famous cousin 'Sango kaku'. 'Beni kawa' also tends to be slightly wider and shorter. You will sometimes see 'Beni kawa' spelled as 'Beni gawa', this is due to a translation error when it was first brought to the U.S. and some growers have never corrected the mistake. Fall color ranges from yellow to orange and usually is an attractive combination of both. Acer palmatum ‘Beni komachi’ is one of the most unique Japanese maples in existence. The name means red beautiful little girl, and aptly describes this attractive maple. Emerging foliage in spring is red but turns to a dark purple fairly quick. As the summer heat approaches the small crinkled leaves turn a very nice dark green but remain edged in purple giving this plant one of the most unique textures in the garden. 'Beni komachi' is slow growing but will eventually grow into a small tree. Fast growing stems with large atypical leaves should be removed. ‘Beni maiko’ means red dancing girl. Emerging foliage in spring is brilliant fire engine red turning pinkish before turning totally green by late May in Georgia. In spring it is hard to distinguish this cultivar from others like 'Shin de shojo' or 'Shishio Improved'. It probably does not hold its color as long as either of these cultivars but in summer after turning completely green it does something unique. The second season growth on mature plants will come out puckered. dark scarlet red with green veins and the lobes of the small odd leaves will sometimes be very strangely shaped. 'Beni maiko' has a very graceful habit, starting off as openly vase shaped when young becomig more round topped with age. Fall color is usually orange.

Acer palmatum ‘Beni otake’ translates to red bamboo, which aptly describes this maple from the linearilobum group. The leaves are a little wider and sturdier than other linearilobum maples. Foliage emerges medium red in spring holding its color well into summer before first bronzing and then turning green. The interesting thing is, as you watch this tree from spring until summer the colors seem to be slightly different, displaying beautiful reds, purples and pinks from week to week, day to day or even hour to hour. In late summer new red growth pushes out of the top of the tree that is now green, giving it a very interesting appearance. Fall color is a really nice crimson. Growing faster than most linearilobum types, ‘Beni otake’ becomes a beautiful vase shaped tree eventually becoming slightly more round topped with age.
