Acer palmatum ‘Anticipation’ is a Maple Ridge Nursery introduction that we have had some fun with over the past few years. It is a beautiful red lace leaf that seems to have an irregular growth habit. It’s most unique feature however, is how late this tree emerges in the spring. This is where the name ‘Anticipation comes from. ‘Anticipation’ routinely waits until the middle to end of April here in Georgia to leaf out, easily the last cultivar at our nursery to do so. There were many years that we thought the tree was dead because it had been so long. This may not seem like a benefit at first, but this trait protects ‘Anticipation’ from any late freezes or frosts. Regardless of the tree’s quirks, ‘Anticipation’ is a beautiful Japanese maple that has excellent red color in the spring that holds quite well throughout the summer even in the heat. Fall color is then a nice bright red. The name simply means green cascading which perfectly describes this great little tree. In spring the green color has a slightly blue tint that separates it from other green dissectums. At one time all green dissectums were probably called 'Ao shidare' but over time this cultivar became dominant and rightly so. Growth is very strong and pendulous. Ao shidare will tolerate full sun better than most green dissectum cultivars but could still benefit from some shade in hotter climates. Acer palmatum ‘Beni shidare’ is one of the most pendulous varieties we grow. It has deep purple red color in spring and maintains its color well into summer before turning bronze and then green. Fall color is bright red and striking. This is probably one of the oldest red dissectum forms, as the name simply means red cascading, at one time all red weeping forms were given this name. Over time a superior clone must have been selected and remains in production today. Acer palmatum ‘Brocade’ is an exceptional laceleaf Japanese maple, prized for its dramatic weeping habit and ever-changing foliage color. In spring, new growth emerges a brilliant orange-red, gradually deepening to rich dark red before softening into red-green tones for summer. Fresh flushes of orange-red new growth continue to appear through the season, adding layers of color and texture.
In autumn, ‘Brocade’ truly lives up to its name, turning glowing shades of bright orange infused with red—often showing even stronger orange fall color than the popular ‘Orangeola,’ though ‘Brocade’ was introduced earlier.
One of the defining characteristics of ‘Brocade’ is its intensely cascading habit. This is one of the most strongly weeping laceleaf varieties available—so much so that, left unstaked, it will creep and flow across the ground, forming a low, spreading mound. Over ten years it typically reaches 1–1.5 feet tall and about 6 feet wide, creating a beautiful carpet of fine, lacy foliage. For a more architectural look, stake ‘Brocade’ to 3–4 feet and allow the branches to cascade downward in dramatic layers.

Acer palmatum 'Chantilly Lace' Lace Leaf Japanese Maple

‘Chantilly Lace’ was found at Red Maple Nursery in 1949 and introduced by Billy Shwartz. This great Japanese maple with the Rock and Roll name has very finely cut leaves. New growth appears red but very quickly changes to green from the center of the leaf out. This effect gives the plant almost a variegated appearance. By summer the foliage is light green almost chartreuse and contrasts greatly with other green maples that start yellow-green only to darken as summer approaches. Fall color is bright raspberry red. 'Chantilly Lace' grows into an irregular mound, some pruning of unruly branches will add to its appeal.
