despite a loose rootball, the small 1 gallon seems to be thriving once planted. I will need to be patient for the expected development. I planted with small hole screen cage to protect from nibbling rabbits, etc) Foliage is beautiful as described! Happy Customer!
Love this plant, if you have deer and shade you will too. Looks like an English yew but the deer leave it alone. I have used these in my landscape for at least 10 years. Oddly this particular variety is difficult to find at a nursery so I usually have to order by mail. This is a plant that prefers to be in the ground and can look pretty mangy in a pot. Do not worry, it will change from ugly duckling to a graceful swan. I have also tried out the upright variety of this species, sadly it is just a little too cold for it here in south central Indiana. I do not go by the current zone designation as 6, for this area, 5 is more accurate. Poor thing died back almost to the base, however it did not die and has made a valiant effort to regrow. For some reason this upright type is available more frequently in local nurseries. Since we have a lot of shade and those darn deer I really appreciate this species. Does not need nearly as much pruning as an English yew either.
The Ryu sei is a stellar tree. I have 2 of them & both are very hardy. If you are looking for a sun tolerant, winter-hardy weeper, this is the one for you. I am a novice Japanese maple lover and both my Ryu seis have tolerated my efforts to kill them. (just kidding...). It is a beautiful, very forgiving tree. And any tree from Maple Ridge will be a healthy tree.

My Red Dragon Maple arrived very quickly. It was perfectly packaged and arrived in excellent condition. No leaves were wilted or damaged. I removed the tree from the packaging and it was as if it had just come from the local nursery downtown. I was impressed with the shape and quality of the tree. I’m pleased with my purchase. Trees were well packaged and good sized. I have not planted them outside yet.
My Mikawa Yatsubusa was packaged VERY well with little soil in the box when it arrived. The tree has bright green foliage and is growing just like the pictures in the website! I can’t wait to see it grow throughout the year! My only “complaint” is that I wish the website showed better images of the different cultivars.
