Acer palmatum 'Beni shien' Variegated Japanese Maplefrom $35.00
Acer palmatum ‘Beni Shien’ is possibly the most unique maple introduced in the last fifty years. Harold Johnson of Tallassee, Alabama introduced this wonderful variegated Japanese maple born of the south and then gave it a Japanese name that translates to red smoke. The deeply divided leaves emerge more purple than anything else, but will have cream markings starting at the base of the leaf and extending along the margins of most of the lobes. In summer the purple of spring will change to olive green in more shade or bronze in more sun. In late summer new red growth will pop out all over the plant. Fall color is usually orange or red. The really cool thing is that no two leaves will be shaped the same.10 year size: Height: 8-10 Feet Width: 6-8 FeetSpring Color: Purple with Cream EdgesSummer Color: Olive Green, BronzeFall Color: Red, OrangeSun Tolerance: FullPlanting: Elevated, Well Drained Soil
Acer palmatum 'Orangeola'from $35.00
'Orangeola' is one of the fastest growing dissectums but still does not attain height very quickly. This great plant changes personality all season long. It emerges with tones of green and orange in early spring and as the sun works it's magic on the foliage it quickly turns purple. Next as spring turns into summer the older leaves start to slowly turn green, this process happens over a number of weeks during which the leaves appear molted with infused colors of green and purple washed across each leaf. About the time the entire plant becomes green in mid to late summer 'Orangeola' decides it is time to grow again, putting out red new growth that lays over the older foliage. Then in fall it really puts on a show with traffic stopping bright orange-red leaves. This plant does extremely well in hotter climates.10 Year Size Height: 3-5 Feet Width: 6-8 FeetSpring Color: RedSummer Color: GreenFall Color: Orange,RedSun Tolerance: FullPlanting: Elevated, Well Drained Soil
Acer palmatum 'Beni otake' Red Bamboo Japanese Maplefrom $35.00
Acer palmatum ‘Beni otake’ translates to red bamboo, which aptly describes this maple from the linearilobum group. The leaves are a little wider and sturdier than other linearilobum maples. Foliage emerges medium red in spring holding its color well into summer before first bronzing and then turning green. The interesting thing is, as you watch this tree from spring until summer the colors seem to be slightly different, displaying beautiful reds, purples and pinks from week to week, day to day or even hour to hour. In late summer new red growth pushes out of the top of the tree that is now green, giving it a very interesting appearance. Fall color is a really nice crimson. Growing faster than most linearilobum types, ‘Beni otake’ becomes a beautiful vase shaped tree eventually becoming slightly more round topped with age. The distinctive look and it's ability to tolerate full sun even in warmer climates make 'Beni otake' a perennial favorite. 10 year size: Height: 10-12 Feet Width: 6-8 Feet Spring Color: Red Summer Color: Burgundy Fall Color: Crimson Sun Tolerance: Full Planting: Elevated, Well Drained
Acer palmatum 'Ariadne' Reticulated Japanese Maplefrom $35.00
Acer palmatum ‘Ariadne’ is a lovely reticulated Japanese maple. ‘Ariadne’ emerges in spring with light pink and peach colored leaves with dark green veins. This reticulated variegation begins to fade in the summer becoming a pale burgundy through the hotter months. The leaves of ‘Ariadne’ show out again in the fall with bright red foliage that really stands out. ‘Ariadne’ is another excellent example of a Japanese maple with reticulated variegation that will bring excellent color to any landscape.10 Year Size: Height: 5-7 feet Width: 4-6 feet
Acer palmatum 'Nuresagi'from $35.00
'Nuresagi' also known as, the 'Wet Heron' maple is very fast growing especially when young. Younger plants tend to put on vertical growth faster than most varieties we grow, sometimes running out 3-4 feet upright leaders in one season. Of course it does not grow at this rate every year. The long leaders will spend some time filling out before sending out more vertical growth. Very nice white striations also appear on the bark of older wood. The name 'Wet Heron' comes from the blue cast created by silver pubescence covering the deep red leaves when they emerge in spring. This reminded the Japanese of the 19th century, of a wet heron. 'Nuresagi' was listed in nursery catalogs as early as 1882. 10 Year size: Height: 18-20 Feet Width: 6-8 Feet Spring Color: Burgundy Summer Color: Burgundy Fall Color: Red Sun Tolerance: Full Planting: Elevated, Well Drained Soil Our 1 Gallon and 3 Gallon sizes are available for shipping and in store pickup. Our larger sizes (7 Gallon and bigger) are only available for in store pickup.
Acer palmatum 'Inaba shidare' Weeping Japanese Maplefrom $35.00
Acer palmatum ‘Inaba shidare’ weeping Japanese maple is one of the best lace leaf cultivars for hotter climates, it's name means "like the cascading leaves of the rice plant" and has been grown since at least the mid 1800s in Japan. The leaves in early spring are very dark purple and I have heard them described as almost black. As summer approaches they become more red, then turning bronze before being one of the last maples in our gardens to finally give in to the Georgia heat and turn green. Fall color is usually bright fiery red. Acer palmatum 'Inaba shidare' weeping Japanese maple is a great tree to add some color to a sunny garden. 10 Year Size: Height: 4-6 Feet Width: 7-9 Feet Spring Color: Dark Purple Summer Color: Bronze Fall Color: Bright Red Sun Tolerance: Full Planting: Elevated, Well Drained Soil Our 1 Gallon and 3 Gallon sizes are available for shipping and in store pickup. Our larger sizes (7 Gallon and bigger) are only available for in store pickup.
Acer palmatum 'Tamukeyama' Dwarf Japanese Maplefrom $35.00
Acer palmatum 'Tamukeyama' Dwarf Japanese maple has been grown in Japan for around 300 years. Recently it has become accepted as one of the best lace leaf varieties in cultivation, and probably the best red lace leaf for hot climates. 'Tamukeyama' not only tolerates but actually thrives in our hot Georgia summers even in full sun. 'Tamukeyama' Dwarf Japanese Maple is one of the fastest growing weeping Japanese maples we grow, slightly more irregular and upright than other lace leaf varieties. New growth is dark red in spring and holds very well especially in sunny locations. Fall color is a mix of fiery reds with a hint of orange undertone that predictably puts on one of the falls best shows. 10 Year Size: Height 6-8 Feet Width 8-10 Feet Spring Color: Red Summer Color: Red Fall Color: Red Sun Tolerance: Full Planting: Elevated, Well Drained Soil Our 1 Gallon and 3 Gallon sizes are available for shipping and in store pickup. Our larger sizes (7 Gallon and bigger) are only available for in store pickup.
Acer palmatum 'Red Dragon'from $35.00
'Red Dragon' will stay more red during summer than most varieties. The coarse leaves begin the spring dark purple and become more red as temperatures increase. By mid August in Georgia when summer temperatures reach their peak and most other red varieties have turned green 'Red Dragon' still has some bronze or slight bits of red left on it's leaves. Fall color is a dramatic crimson red. The growth habit of 'Red Dragon' is not as pendulous as other weeping cultivars, at times almost prostrate. While 'Red Dragon' will tolerate full sun in some climates, it would prefer a break from the sun at some point during the day in hotter areas. Although 'Red Dragon is reported to be a moderate grower in some climates, we find it to be very slow in the south. 10 Year Size Height: 3-5 Feet Width: 5-6 FeetSpring Color: RedSummer Color: RedFall Color: CrimsonSun Tolerance: PartialPlanting: Elevated, Well Drained Soil
Acer palmatum 'Amagi shigure' Reticulated Japanese Maplefrom $35.00
One of the most frustrating aspects of collecting Japanese Maples is nomenclature. This is compounded when different trees are introduced with the same name. There is a small green leafed dwarf with this name described by Vertrees before 1985. Since this tree was apparently introduced in 1987 according to Yano in his "Book for Maples", this name is illegitimate for this cultivar so we identify this plant as Amagi shigure "Japanese Selection"All this is even more distressing because this is an outstanding cultivar. Starting in early spring with bright pink leaves the reticulation becomes more pronounced and the leaves become more red as spring progresses. In summer the leaves darken and become more purple while the prominent black veins remain. While more sun tolerant than other reticulated varieties this cultivar still appreciates some shade especially in hotter climates. Fall color is orange and spectacular. 10 Year Size: Height: 4-6 Feet Width: 3-4 Feet
Acer palmatum 'Geisha Gone Wild'from $35.00
Acer palmatum ‘Geisha Gone Wild’ is variegated with pink, purple, cream and green making a spectacular display in the garden. Fall color is orange and purple. So similar to 'Gwen's Rose Delight' that even the experienced collector may not be able to tell them apart, these to cultivars apparently both were collected from sports on 'Geisha' on opposite sides of the world. 'Geisha Gone Wild' is much more vigorous and stable than her sister plant.10 year size: Height: 8-10 Feet Width: 4-6 FeetSpring Color: Burgundy and PinkSummer Color: Green and CreamFall Color: Orange and PurpleSun Tolerance: PartialPlanting: Elevated, Well Drained Soil
Acer palmatum 'Twombley's Red Sentinel'from $35.00
‘Twombley’s Red Sentinel’ is a great introduction discovered as a witches broom on a 'Bloodgood' by Ken Twombly of Twombly Nursery, Monroe Connecticut. Much more vigorous than most witches brooms, 'Twombley's Red Sentinel' quickly develops the upright columnar habit for which it has become famous but will widen some with age. New leaves appear crimson red then quickly darken to burgundy but as this plant almost always seems to be growing it has a two toned effect most of the year. 'Twombley's Red Sentinel' holds it's color all year in many climates and well into the year even in hot climates, tolerating full sun as far south as Atlanta Georgia. Fall color is a spectacular red and the dark red stems of the last new growth even add interest to the winter landscape. 10 Year Size: Height: 10-12 Feet Width: 4-6 FeetSpring Color: BurgundySummer Color: BurgundyFall Color: RedSun Tolerance: FullPlanting: Elevated, Well Drained Soil
Acer palmatum 'Red Emperor' Japanese Maplefrom $35.00
Acer palmatum ‘Red Emperor’ Japanese maple was originally introduced by Dick Wolff at Red Maple Nursery in Pennsylvania as Emperor 1 in 1976 and much later patented under that name by someone in Oregon. Many growers grow this plant as 'Red Emperor'. It does not matter what you call it, this is a great plant. It is one of many in a long line of trees to claim the title "Better Than Bloodgood" and in some ways it is. 'Red Emperor' Japanese maple does not burn in full sun in the Southeast, as to how well it holds it's color, we find that in some landscapes it does as well or better than other cultivars but in other situations it seems to turn green a little quicker. We have yet to determine what causes this. Either way, this tree will not disappoint you. Another advantage is that it usually leafs out a few days later than 'Bloodgood' in the spring lessening the chance of frost damage. The growth rate of 'Red Emperor' Japanese maple is very good, spring color is dark purple and fall color is bright red. 10 Year Size: Height: 15-18 Feet Width: 12-15 Feet Spring Color: Burgundy Summer Color: Burgundy Fall Color: Red Sun Tolerance: Full Planting: Elevated, Well Drained Soil Our 1 Gallon and 3 Gallon sizes are available for shipping and in store pickup. Our larger sizes (7 Gallon and bigger) are only available for in store pickup.
Acer palmatum 'Crimson Queen'from $35.00
Introduced in 1965 ‘Crimson Queen’ has become the standard by which all red, lace leaf maples are judged and probably the most common dissectum grown in America. This is one of the very best Japanese maple dissectums. Its color, when in prime leaf, is unsurpassed. Crimson Queen will tolerate full sun, even in hot climates but it is much happier if it can be provided with a few hours shade during the day or indirect light. Under perfect conditions Crimson Queen can hold its red color as well or better than most cultivars. The growth habit is decidedly pendulous and will form a beautiful low mound only gaining height as it matures and begins to mound over itself. Crimson Queen left on it's own is beautiful and graceful but with a little training can become a specimen anyone could be proud of.10 year size: Height: 4-6 Feet Width 6-8 FeetSpring Color: BurgundySummer Color: Green, BronzeFall Color: RedSun Tolerance: FullPlanting: Elevated, Well Drained Soil
Acer palmatum 'Moonfire'from $35.00
'Moonfire' is one of our favorites. It seems to grow faster and hold it's color better in shade than other red leaf cultivars. 'Moonfire' also tolerates full sun and maintains it's color into the hot Georgia summer as well as any upright variety we grow. The foliage of 'Moonfire' comes out dark purple in spring but tends to turn more red as summer nears, except in more shady locations where the color remains more purple. It's leaves are slightly translucent and tend to glow when the sun lights them from behind. Fall color is bright fiery red. 'Moonfire' was discovered by Dick Wolff in 1974.10 Year Size: Height: 12-14 feet Width: 10-12 feetSpring Color: BurgundySummer Color: BurgundyFall Color: RedSun Tolerance: FullPlanting: Elevated, Well Drained Soil
Acer palmatum 'Fireglow'from $35.00
'Fireglow' is the perfect name for this small upright Japanese maple introduced by Nurseries Gilardelli in Italy. The leaves emerge more dark red than purple in spring and are thinner than other cultivars making them somewhat translucent. If sited where it can be viewed with the rising or setting sun behind it the leaves will glow a bright red. If you are watching when the sun gets to the proper angle it looks like someone turned on an electrical switch and the tree was lit. Rather slow growing for an upright. Fall color is bright red. 10 Year Size: Height: 10-12 feet Width: 4-6 feetSpring Color: Dark RedSummer Color: RedFall Color: RedSun Tolerance: FullPlanting: Elevated, Well Drained Soil
Acer palmatum 'Purple Ghost'from $35.00
‘Purple Ghost’ is another of the reticulated leaf form ghost series from Talon Buchholz. Foliage appears deep purple in early spring with adequate sun, in more shady locations foliage appears more lavender but regardless of location what makes this leaf special is the prominent black veins. In summer the color turns to green with purple undertones. 'Purple Ghost' tolerates full sun in some areas but requires afternoon shade in hotter climates. Fall color varies from deep red to reddish orange.10 Year Size: Height: 8-10 Feet Width: 5-6 FeetSpring Color: PurpleSummer Color: GreenFall Color: RedSun Tolerance: FullPlanting: Elevated, Well Drained Soil
