One of the older dissectums in cultivation in Europe having been grown for well over 100 years. It is still popular today although competition from varieties that hold color longer into summer has caused production to decrease. Emerging green dusted with red in shady areas to a rusty red in more sun, 'Ornatum' forms a large graceful shrub when mature. While very heat tolerant 'Ornatum' does prefer light shade in hot climates. 'Green Hornet' is unusually fast growing for a lace leaf maple and because of this it can benefit greatly from pruning or training when young to get it started in the right direction. Shoots on newly grafted plants may grow 2 feet or more the first year. As the plant ages its vigorous growth becomes an asset creating a graceful plant with long arching branches. Spring growth is lime green sometimes with orange margins when placed in more sun, however at least partial shade is preferred in hotter climates. Hana matoi is probably the most exciting new Japanese Maple ever to hit the American market. The pink variegation is phenomenal. The variegation holds up well even in our hot climate and so far, it does not seem to revert like some of the other variegated varieties. The spring foliage emerges purple with cream and pink variegation. As the temperatures rise heading into summer the base color changes from purple to green but the wonderful pink and cream variegation remain all summer.

Acer palmatum 'Dixie Spirit' Upright Lace Leaf Japanese Maple

Acer palmatum ‘Dixie Spirit’ is one of several different dissectum varieties that grows more upright rather than weeping. My father once told me that if anyone could ever discover a red version of ‘Seiryu’, then they would be a millionaire. While, I’ve learned that this was probably hyperbole, I have long been searching for a tree that fit this description. There are several trees currently on the market that come close such as ‘Lionheart’ and ‘English Lace’ but neither of these varieties have quite the same upward growth as ‘Seiryu’.‘Dixie Spirit’ is our introduction that fits into this category. ‘Dixie Spirit’ grows decidedly upright at least while young. We are still monitoring the tree to see if the upright habit continues in perpetuity. ‘Dixie Spirit’ shows off a gorgeous crimson red color in the spring while fading to a bronze or olive green in the summer. The leaf of 'Washi-no-o’ is a little more coarse than some dissectums and the margins of each lobe are cut more regularly and less deep than most dissectums giving it a very unique texture. This mounding shrub type maple tolerates more sun than most green lace leafs. I have even grown this cultivar in full sun in Atlanta, Georgia but some shade would be appreciated. This cultivar out of Australia has an interesting reddish color in early spring becoming more bronze as summer approaches. ‘Chantilly Lace’ was found at Red Maple Nursery in 1949 and introduced by Billy Shwartz. This great Japanese maple with the Rock and Roll name has very finely cut leaves. New growth appears red but very quickly changes to green from the center of the leaf out. This effect gives the plant almost a variegated appearance. By summer the foliage is light green almost chartreuse and contrasts greatly with other green maples that start yellow-green only to darken as summer approaches. Fall color is bright raspberry red.
