Just like a Phoenix rises from the ashes, Acer palmatum ‘Phoenix’ rises out of dormancy with bright red leaves in the spring. This bright red color is especially contrasted by yellow-orange veining. ‘Phoenix’ is a member of the Corallinum group of Japanese maples that all typically leaf out a spectacular red before turning green for most of the spring and summer. Like the rest of the maples in this group, ‘Phoenix’ will also often have red new growth in the summer to really contrast off of the green leaves. Acer palmatum 'Beni maiko' Corallinum Japanese Maple

‘Beni maiko’ means red dancing girl. Emerging foliage in spring is brilliant fire engine red turning pinkish before turning totally green by late May in Georgia. In spring it is hard to distinguish this cultivar from others like 'Shin de shojo' or 'Shishio Improved'. It probably does not hold its color as long as either of these cultivars but in summer after turning completely green it does something unique. The second season growth on mature plants will come out puckered. dark scarlet red with green veins and the lobes of the small odd leaves will sometimes be very strangely shaped. 'Beni maiko' has a very graceful habit, starting off as openly vase shaped when young becomig more round topped with age. Fall color is usually orange.

Acer palmatum ‘Otome zakura’ is a member of the Corallinum group of Japanese maples and is one of our favorites. All of these Corallinum type Japanese maples leaf out very early in the spring, and when they do, ‘Otome zakura’ has some of the brightest red foliage you can imagine. This incredible red color typically holds through April. The colors then transition to orange and then eventually green by the end of May. Much like other Corallinum type Japanese maples and maybe more than the others, ‘Otome zakura’ will usually push new growth in the summer which resembles the bright red foliage of spring. This red new growth on top of the olive green foliage is extremely attractive. Acer palmatum 'Noel' is a variegated Japanese maple from the corallinum category of Japanese maples. Like many corallinum type Japanese Maples 'Noel' is bright red in the early spring. 'Noel' might even have the brightest red spring color of any of the corallinum type Japanese maples. What makes 'Noel' even more unique is the splashes of pink variegation that show out across much of the foliage. This bright red with pink variegation gives 'Noel' one of the best spring displays of any Japanese maple. By summer the red leaves fade to an emerald green and maintain the splashes of pink. The leaves then turn bright red again for fall. This is a newer variety for us, but has quickly become one of our very favorite Japanese maples

Acer palmatum ‘Deshojo’ is a wonderful little tree known mostly for its excellent spring color. ‘Deshojo’ leafs out in spring with a bright coral red color to the leaves which is quite striking in any landscape. These showy leaves unfortunately don’t last very long however, turning a solid green in late spring that maintains throughout the summer. ‘Deshojo’ shows out again in the fall when the leaves transition back to a bright red. ‘Deshojo’ is a fairly small growing tree in the landscape and is a wonderful cultivar for bonsai.

Acer palmatum 'Corallinum' represents a fine example of a whole group of similar maples that emerge salmon-pink to pinkish-red in spring. These 5 lobed semi dwarf trees are all known for there spectacular spring displays. More pink than 'Shinde shojo' or Beni maiko', Corallinum really stands out in the garden. Even the new stems and petioles are pink to red. Though a fantastic tree it tends to always be leggy in pots and never really fills in until planted in the ground for a couple of years. Also 'Corallinum is never as pink for us in the Southeast as it is for people in cooler climates. After turning green in early June we are usually treated to a second burst of color in August with the new flush of pinkish-red new leaves. Fall color is usually an orange-red to pink-red.

The first 4-6 weeks of spring there are very few Japanese Maples that can compete with the brilliant crimson red color of 'Bonfire' foliage. Unfortunately the spring color is short lived and turns first bronze and then green as summer nears. The growth habit is short and stocky, almost as wide as tall. Fall color in the south is usually bright red sometimes leaning toward orange-red. There seems to be some confusion with the similarity between 'Bonfire', 'Akaji nishiki' and 'Seigai'. It seems that these are three different plants, 'Bonfire' and 'Akaji Nishiki' leaves are practically the same but 'Bonfire' is shorter and denser. Acer palmatum ‘Beni komachi’ is one of the most unique Japanese maples in existence. The name means red beautiful little girl, and aptly describes this attractive maple. Emerging foliage in spring is red but turns to a dark purple fairly quick. As the summer heat approaches the small crinkled leaves turn a very nice dark green but remain edged in purple giving this plant one of the most unique textures in the garden. 'Beni komachi' is slow growing but will eventually grow into a small tree. Fast growing stems with large atypical leaves should be removed.
